Year in Review: 911±¬ÁÏ’ Top 5 news stories

For 911±¬ÁÏ, 2019 has been filled with exciting new opportunities and a long list of achievements by alumni, students, faculty and staff. Now that the year is coming to a close, it is appropriate to revisit some of the top news at 911±¬ÁÏ this year.

5.Ìý911±¬ÁÏ Hosts 911±¬ÁÏ SACA Leadership Conference

911±¬ÁÏ was selected to host the 2019 Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA) Leadership Conference, September 6-8, at its Illinois campus.  The theme was “Excellence is Our Standard.”

Approximately 150 students elected to SACA positions at universities around the country participated in the conference, which included a new feature called “SACA Talks.” Among the conference speakers were five selected students who addressed topics ranging from community health to perceptions and biases looking inward and out.

4.ÌýLRC Receives Major Medical Book Donation

In July, the office of Illinois Ìý(8th District) assisted the 911±¬ÁÏ University Learning Resource Center (LRC) in obtaining 36 medical books free from the Library of Congress’ .

Russ Iwami, 911±¬ÁÏ Reference Librarian, took the lead in applying for the donation on behalf of the Fox Valley Health Science Library Consortium, which represents a group of medical libraries in the area. The Consortium requested medical books relevant to medical doctors, nurses or complementary medicine practitioners.

“This allowed us to get not only books that we wanted, but materials that complement our collection that we would not otherwise be able to obtain within our budget,” Iwami noted. The donation is the first of an expected delivery of materials several times a year through the Surplus Books Program

3.ÌýNew Homeopathic Clinical Opportunity for 911±¬ÁÏ Students

In May, 911±¬ÁÏ announced a new opportunity for naturopathic medicine students to participate in a homeopathy rotation through the  (CIH) in Lombard, IL.

The rotation focuses on constitutional homeopathic case-taking and prescribing. The goal is to give 911±¬ÁÏ interns the opportunity to work with patients under direct supervision and expand their knowledge of homeopathic modalities.

“It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn from physicians who are experts in this field,” said Lisa Krebs, ND, a 911±¬ÁÏ University alumna who now practices at CIH. “Students will come away with the confidence and skills to accurately use this important modality in practice.”

2.Ìý911±¬ÁÏ Alumnus Named ACA Chiropractor of the Year

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) presented its highest honor, the , to 911±¬ÁÏ alumnus N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC, ’97, during its annual meeting January 16-19 in Washington, D.C.

ACA’s award recognizes chiropractors and other individuals for their exceptional service, achievement and/or leadership within the chiropractic profession. Dr. Tuck, who served as ACA’s president in 2018, was recognized for his strong leadership during a period of ongoing change and growth for the association.

Under Dr. Tuck’s helm, ACA also took significant steps to promote evidence-based chiropractic care through a new online learning platform, Learn ACA, and to acknowledge the important role that diversity and cultural competency play in providing better patient care.

1.Ìý2019 Homecoming Celebrates 10 Years of Florida site

911±¬ÁÏ alumni from around the country gathered in Orlando to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Florida site during Homecoming 2019 from August 22-25.

“This year’s homecoming was a celebration of 911±¬ÁÏ’s past, present and future.  While we celebrated 10 years of the Florida site, we also brought together the people that make a homecoming successful – alumni from Illinois and Florida as well as current faculty, staff and students,” said 911±¬ÁÏ President Joseph Stiefel, MS, EdD, DC.
