Are you passionate about science or health care but undecided on your career path? An undergraduate degree in biomedical science is a great place to start!

Biomedical science includes any course of study related to biology as it affects health care. It includes classes such as physiology, anatomy, epidemiology, biochemistry, nutrition and kinesiology. Biomedical sciences are the foundation of knowledge for all health care professionals.

A bachelor鈥檚 degree in biomedical science positions you for a wide variety of career opportunities. The field is constantly evolving and always in demand in order to meet ongoing health care needs. It is also a field that has the resources necessary to expand. As technology continues to progress and develop, new career paths within the field of biomedicine are emerging.

Here are a few in-demand career paths within the biomedical science field that you should know about:

Neuroscientist

With the advancement of computer technology and artificial intelligence (AI), neuroscience, which involves the study of the brain鈥檚 nervous system and neuronal cell biology, has been steadily expanding. These three fields have become more interconnected as scientists continue to develop various types of technology, including robotic arms that allow paralyzed patients to reach out and grab objects as they would with a natural arm.

neuroscience biomedical science careers

According to , AI can now emulate how the brain performs certain computations enabling neuroscientists to obtain further insights into how the brain works–an effort that might lead to machines that can take on more human-like intelligence. While neuroscientists need advanced degrees, their salaries typically average about .

Epigenetics researcher

Epigenetics is an emerging field about external modifications to DNA that turn genes 鈥渙n or off鈥 and affect how genes are expressed—all without changes to the DNA sequence. For example, environmental factors like diet and pollution exposure can both impact a person鈥檚 epigenome.

According to the , until recently, scientists thought that human diseases were caused mainly by changes in DNA sequence and infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses, or environmental agents. New research has shown that epigenome changes can also cause or result from disease. While this field has been around for several years, exactly how epigenetics impacts disease still remains a mystery.

Today, millions of dollars in funding and other resources are being dedicated into the study of . In July 2020, 911爆料 Institutes of Health researchers published a comparing epigenetic differences between humans and domestic dogs to provide an emerging model of aging. Other recent research published in this year shows that epigenetics changes could signal increased risk of cancer.

With the rise in cancer, inherited disorders, viral infections, etc., , a market research and consulting company, expects the epigenetics market to reach $19.12 billion by 2026.

If you鈥檙e interested in performing research, this newly established field may be right for you.

Genetic counselor

Once costly and time-consuming, genetic testing has now become both widespread and affordable. In addition to commercial companies that offer genealogical DNA tests, the public also has the ability to test their DNA to learn how inherited diseases might affect them.

That鈥檚 where genetic counselors come in. Often in a clinic or hospital setting, genetic counselors help patients choose which genetic tests might be right for them and, based off of results, how to make informed decisions regarding their health. Today most health insurance providers cover these services too.

This field has grown so much in the last decade that genetic counseling was recently named the second most in-demand job in the life sciences, according to an industry news site. From 2018 to 2028, the (BLS) projects a 27% growth in genetic counselor jobs.

Unlike physicians and researchers, genetic counselors typically don鈥檛 need as much schooling. After obtaining a bachelor鈥檚 degree, genetic counselors generally need to receive their Master鈥檚 in genetic counseling.

Cytogenetics technologist

Cytogenetics is a branch in the growing field of genetics that involves examining chromosomes to identify structural abnormalities. Unlike genetic counselors who discuss genetic testing with patients, cytogenetic technologists actually perform genetic testing. Because this field has led to new discoveries in cancer research, inherited genetic abnormalities and genome evolution, its practical applications continue to expand.

With just four-year degree and additional certification depending on which state you live in, you can become a cytogenetic technologist who works alongside doctors to help diagnose and treat a variety of genetic diseases such as congenital disorders, blood disorders, tumors, and birth defects.

According to the , the emphasis on personalized medicine and use of targeted therapies will increase the demand for cytogenetic technologists in the years to come.

Cheminformatics

Cheminformatics combines the field of chemistry (including its applications to biology) with computer and information science techniques in order to create chemical databases and virtual libraries.

According to the , much work remains to be done on integrating chemical information, mining information from journal articles, and applying this information to understanding and predicting how chemicals affect entire systems, including human bodies.

cheminformatics career biomedical science

Degrees in both biomedical sciences and information technology (IT) can be especially helpful for newly developing cheminformatic job opportunities at national laboratories and various government agencies, including those doing research on toxicology and biomedicine.

New advances in technology means more job opportunities and demand. Graduates seeking work in this field are no longer limited to working at hospitals, clinics and laboratories. Today, they often work in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, computer systems design, government, pharmaceutical companies and more.

A BS degree in biomedical science can be a gateway to working in these exciting fields!

To have a successful career in acupuncture, a solid grasp of human anatomy is essential. In addition to palpitation techniques that identify acupuncture points by feeling for landmarks along the body, a western structure perspective of anatomy can significantly help practitioners needle patients more effectively.

911爆料 ensures its students have an advanced understanding of anatomy through the use of actual cadavers. In fact, 911爆料 University is one of the first schools in the world with acupuncture听and听oriental medicine programs听that incorporated the dissection of cadavers for acupuncture point and meridian studies.

Here鈥檚 why this type of curriculum will benefit your career as an acupuncturist.

Hands-on experience provides a deeper understanding of anatomy.

Many acupuncture programs provide basic anatomy courses, but there鈥檚 only so much students can learn from textbooks or plastic models. As part of a cadaver dissection course, 911爆料 students benefit from an interactive hands-on learning experience. By dissecting actual cadavers through skin, superficial fascia, muscle and bone, students gain a deeper, more three-dimensional understanding of the human body.

You will be able to more accurately identify acupuncture points.

To ensure the best therapeutic outcome, accurate needle placement is key. Traditional methods for locating acupuncture points typically rely on palpation, which involves feeling for various landmarks along the body. However, this practice can be very subjective and may sometimes lead to a less than accurate needling location. Today, the acupuncture profession is leaning more toward exact point location. This requires an in-depth understanding of the various tissues, structures and nerves in any given part of the body and its relationship to the placement of the needle. By studying at 911爆料, you will be able to locate needlepoints using various methods.

This more accurate method is one patients likely prefer too.

You will be able to better visualize where your needle is going.

Practitioners should be able to recognize and visualize the critical anatomical structures underneath acupuncture point locations. Through dissection, students follow point locations through each layer of tissue. This allows students to see various anatomical structures that their acupuncture needle is stimulating along with the depths different tissue can be accessed by the needle. After the course, students often report better point location skills and more confidence when working with actual patients.

You will be able to needle more safely.

When students have a thorough understanding of anatomy through cadaver dissection, they are able to needle safely and securely.听 In addition to understanding where to needle, students also know where not to needle.

While needling, students may want to avoid one structure while targeting another specific structure in order to avoid damage. This vital skill and knowledge can be only achieved by having both palpation skills and a three-dimensional understanding of the human body through the cadaver dissection. This way, practitioners leave less room for error and in turn achieve better patient outcomes.

You鈥檒l benefit from learning both eastern and western medicine.

Anatomy and cadaver dissection coursework is one way the 911爆料 acupuncture program combines eastern medicine philosophies with western medicine. In addition to anatomy, 911爆料 acupuncture students also learn fundamental biomedical science and modern medical diagnostics including coursework in radiology, pathology, physiology, microbiology, and public health. This unique combination allows students to become more well-rounded practitioners who can utilize different aspects of both perspectives in their future practice.

In the job market, superior needling skills can give students a competitive edge to others who may not have had this unique level of training. You鈥檝e done your research to find the most rigorous graduate program available for a doctor of chiropractic medicine, doctor of naturopathic medicine, master of science in acupuncture, or master of science in oriental medicine. You may also want an immersive integrative medicine educational experience that is not available elsewhere. Whatever led you to 911爆料 University of Health Sciences, we want your application process to go smoothly and successfully.

Here are three insider tips to help you successfully apply to one of the graduate degree programs at 911爆料.

1. Be sure you fulfill the GPA, prerequisite coursework and bachelor鈥檚 degree requirements 潭听 but if you don鈥檛, we can help!

For the听Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)听and听Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND)听programs, you must have the following.

  • Completed a baccalaureate degree, by date of entry. Don’t worry if you haven’t completed your degree when you apply. All documents aren’t required to be submitted at the same time. You can start the process while still completing your prerequisite coursework and degree, and even receive a conditional admission, which will indicate your remaining requirements.
  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale). Those with between 2.75 and 2.99 may be considered for admission under an Alternative Admissions Track Plan (AATP).

If you don鈥檛 meet these requirements, never fear because we offer you options for getting what you need! If you have a bachelor’s degree but not all of the required science courses, you may enroll in 911爆料鈥 prerequisite program听to complete those courses. If you do not have a bachelor鈥檚 degree, you can earn it in the听BS in Biomedical Science听completion degree program at 911爆料.

For the听Master of Science in Acupuncture (MSAc)听and听Master of Science in Oriental Medicine (MSOM)听programs, a baccalaureate degree is not required, however, you should have earned:

  • 60 undergraduate semester credit hours for the MSAc program
  • 90 undergraduate semester credit hours for the MSOM program
  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.00 scale)

Insider Tip
If you intend to pursue the DC or ND programs, it’s important to choose the right undergraduate classes so you will be both prepared for our rigorous graduate programs and able to meet admission requirements. Check out our听suggested course outlines,听where we’ve listed specific courses that will meet 911爆料 admission guidelines.

2. Submit an Application and All Other Required Admission Documents

911爆料 University has a rolling admission schedule, which means that you can apply for entry into any of the three trimesters 潭潭 Fall (September), Spring (January) or Summer (May).

Apply early!听911爆料 programs are competitive, so it is important for you to apply as early as possible 鈥斕齣deally 9-12 months before your starting trimester. If your intended start term is sooner, contact the听Admissions office听right away to determine your next steps.

Here鈥檚 what you need to submit:

  • A completed online or paper application with the $55 application fee
  • Three short essays (400-500 words): The essays will allow us to better understand your reasons for selecting your program of study and your desire to pursue a degree at 911爆料 University. Give thoughtful consideration to your answers and be sure to follow the stated guidelines. You don’t have to submit the essays with your application. Spend more time writing excellent essays rather than rushing through them. It’s not looked upon negatively if you send them separately from your application.
  • Two character references: You will need to provide character references from past or current professors, employers or physicians that you may have shadowed. References must be mailed or emailed to 911爆料 directly from the person writing the reference. We will not take a reference (even if it’s in a sealed envelope) delivered by an applicant.
  • All official undergraduate college transcripts: We will need transcripts from every undergraduate institution you have attended 鈥 even if you only took a few classes at a school. Allow for enough time for your undergraduate institution to forward official transcripts. The time that is required for this varies from school to school. You can submit unofficial transcripts for an evaluation and provide official documents as soon as they’re available.

3. Complete an Admissions Interview

You will be required to have a phone interview with your admission counselor. You will be asked a series of questions, the responses to which will become part of your admissions file. That process will allow us to better understand you, your career goals and your reasons for applying to 911爆料. It’s important to remember that your interaction with your counselor matters. Communicate in a professional manner with your admission counselor at all times. If you are deemed eligible for admission, it’s your counselor who submits you to the admission committee for review.

Congratulations, You鈥檙e In! What鈥檚 Next?

If you are admitted into one of the graduate professional programs, you will be notified by letter. After you celebrate, be sure to pay the $225 seat deposit to hold your place.听It’s important that you pay that deposit promptly, as it’s the only thing that will guarantee your spot in the program.听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听

The best way to decide if the college you are interested in is the right place for you is to visit. And the best time to visit 911爆料 University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Ill., or St. Petersburg, Fla., is during Summer Soak Up, May 1 颅潭 August 31.

While seeing the swans on beautiful Lake Janse on the Lombard campus and the short drive to Disney World from the Florida site are big draws, here are five more practical reasons you will want to visit either location before August 31.

1. Double the Tuition Credit and Travel Reimbursement

Summer visitors are eligible for a $1,000 tuition credit toward their first trimester in one of our graduate programs, or a $500 tuition credit toward the first trimester in our undergraduate and certificate programs听 潭听 double the amount during other times of year. It鈥檚 a great head start to financing your education!

Not only that, but those who live 75 miles or more from campus and apply to one of our programs may submit receipts for reimbursement of eligible travel expenses up to $500!

2. Get Answers and Get to Know Your Future Classmates and Instructors

If you want to be fully informed about our programs and understand our culture, talking face-to-face with students, staff and faculty is the way to go. Visiting helps you start building relationships with the faculty and staff who will be there to help guide you through your education. By talking with current students, you鈥檒l get first-hand accounts of how to succeed in a rigorous medical program while still maintaining balance in your life.

3. Evaluate our Teaching Methods

Do you prefer a hands-on approach, or do you learn better through more traditional, lecture-based classes? 911爆料 University鈥檚 programs are rigorous and challenging, which means our graduates are well-prepared professionals. It is wise to experience our learning environment first-hand to make sure that our teaching practices mesh with your learning style and preferences. Summer Soak Up Student for a Day visit events even offer the chance to sit in on two different class lectures!

4. Explore our Facilities and Resources

A university鈥檚 facilities and resources have a big impact on your professional preparation and college life experience. There鈥檚 no better way to evaluate the classrooms, labs, and clinical and library resources than to see them in person. The favorite stop on the 911爆料 Lombard campus tour is the state-of-the-art Gross Anatomy Lab, where students in all of our graduate and undergraduate programs learn through hands-on instruction with human cadavers. 听You鈥檒l also see the on-campus Whole Health Center, Training and Assessment Center, Herbal Dispensary, Botanical Garden, Learning Resource Center, Anatomage Table and the state-of-the-art Hydrotherapy Suite

You鈥檒l be spending a significant amount of time on and close to school, so it鈥檚 important to also consider the university鈥檚 amenities and living options. Our Illinois campus houses a well-equipped fitness center and offers convenient on-campus apartment-style housing, including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom options where students can live individually, with roommates or with their families. In both Lombard and St. Petersburg, there are also a wide variety of near-by housing options available.

5. Get a Feel for the Campus and the Chicago or Tampa Bay Area

Finding a school where you feel at home is one of the most important factors to consider. After all, you will be spending a significant amount of time here! Experiencing the feel of campus and student life is not possible over phone or email.

Summer is also the best time to wander the area to explore all of the many great restaurants, shopping, museums, and nearby bike and hiking trails in the Lombard area (oh, and did we mention that downtown Chicago is nearby?). Or enjoy all that the St. Petersburg, Fla., area has to offer, just a short drive from Tampa.

If you’re unable to attend a group event, you can schedule a personal tour specific to your interest at your convenience.
