In recent years, acupuncture has become increasingly well-accepted within the medical community. Many hospitals, clinics and health care providers offer acupuncture as a complementary or alternative treatment option alongside conventional medical treatments. This is due to a growing body of听scientific research听on acupuncture鈥檚 effectiveness. Many studies have shown positive outcomes for pain management, stress reduction, nausea and other conditions.

As acupuncturists make their way into more mainstream medical environments like hospitals and fertility clinics, a more advanced, doctoral level of training in acupuncture is quickly becoming necessary. 911爆料 University of Health Sciences (911爆料) offers a Doctor of Acupuncture (DAc) program, as well as a Doctor of Acupuncture Completion (DAc-C) program for individuals who already hold a master鈥檚 degree in Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine.

While some jurisdictions allow acupuncturists to practice with a master鈥檚 level of training, there are several advantages to gaining a doctoral degree in the field, no matter where you reside. Here are six reasons why you might want to consider obtaining a more advanced level of training in the field of acupuncture.

1) You will have the advanced diagnostic skills needed in an integrative setting.听

Doctoral-level training typically offers more extensive education in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostics, including pulse reading and tongue diagnosis, along with Western diagnostic methods. You will be exposed to coursework in physiology, neurology and pathology. While few schools even offer anatomy education through full cadaver dissection in a gross anatomy lab, 911爆料 does. This deeper understanding can lead to more accurate diagnoses.

This skill is particularly important when working in an integrated setting. Advanced diagnosis skills will help you understand when it is appropriate to refer patients to other specialties. Even in private practice, it is important to build relationships with other practitioners in your area, who can in turn refer patients to you.

In a medical or integrated setting, many of your colleagues may have a doctoral level of training. It is important that you can speak the same language. This goes far beyond just understanding medical terminology. Having a doctorate means you will be able to better discuss all aspects of your patient鈥檚 case. This includes diagnosis, treatment options along with care they have already received.

2) You may have an expanded scope of practice.听

Education level can directly influence the scope of practice acupuncturists are able to perform, particularly within a hospital setting. Acupuncturists performing basic treatments may not require doctoral-level training, while those involved in complex cases, research and interdisciplinary collaboration are more likely to have an advanced education.

If you are interested in working on more complex cases or a larger variety of cases as an acupuncturist, you may want to consider obtaining a doctorate in acupuncture. Doctoral-level programs typically provide more in-depth and advanced training in acupuncture techniques, diagnosis and treatment strategies. This higher level of expertise can enhance your ability to effectively address complex cases and offer more specialized treatments.

3) You will have a higher level of professional recognition within the medical community and among your patients.听

To many, a doctoral degree demonstrates that you have met certain standards of education, training and ethics. As a result, a doctorate will provide you with increased recognition within the health care community and among patients. It can also convey a higher level of commitment to the field.

When patients seek acupuncture treatments, they want assurance that they are receiving care from a qualified and competent practitioner. When you have a doctoral level of training, patients may be more confident that you have the necessary skills to provide safe and effective treatments, reducing the risk of harm.

Increased recognition within the field is likely to attract more patients and potentially lead to higher income opportunities. Pursuing a doctorate in acupuncture might also provide acupuncturists with opportunities for career advancement, specialization and leadership roles within hospitals or other integrated environments.

4) Hospitals may prefer a doctoral level of training.听

If you plan on practicing in a hospital, a doctorate can help you 鈥済et your foot in the door鈥 professionally. Some of America鈥檚 top hospitals offer acupuncture treatments, including the Mayo Clinic, the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Duke University Medical Center and Yale New Haven Hospital. These hospitals may prefer acupuncturists with advanced training to ensure an elevated level of expertise. Acupuncturists with a doctoral level of training can also help establish the credibility of acupuncture as a complementary therapy within a medical setting.

The qualifications for acupuncturists to work in hospitals varies. One day, a hospital鈥檚 preference for advanced degrees may become a requirement.

5) More jurisdictions may require a doctoral level of training in the near future.

The educational requirements to legally practice acupuncture vary widely in the United States. Some states already require a higher level of training as a licensed doctor of acupuncture or physician to practice, such as Arkansas, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico and Rhode Island.

As the acupuncture profession evolves and becomes more commonplace within medical settings, a doctorate might become required for licensure in certain jurisdictions.

Since a doctoral degree is the highest level of training you can achieve within the acupuncture field, you will not need to worry about obtaining additional education; you will be able to practice in a wider range of jurisdictions.

6) You may be able to add to acupuncture鈥檚 growing body of research.听

Obtaining a Doctor of Acupuncture degree can expand opportunities for you to get involved with research in the field. Doctoral programs often include coursework in research methodology, helping practitioners critically evaluate acupuncture research and apply evidence-based practices in their clinical work. This emphasis on research can lead to better patient outcomes and help contribute to the overall credibility of acupuncture as a medical modality and to your practice.

Research involvement can range from conducting clinical studies to contributing to the growing body of knowledge on acupuncture鈥檚 effectiveness and mechanisms of action. In your private acupuncture practice, you can conduct case studies or small research projects to evaluate the effectiveness of specific treatment approaches for your patients. While these might not be large-scale studies, they can still contribute valuable insights.

A doctorate is the highest degree you can attain in the听promising field of acupuncture. As more practitioners attain this advanced level of education, it is likely to benefit the field overall.

Professional recognition not only helps individual practitioners but also contributes to the overall growth, credibility and integration of acupuncture within the broader health care landscape. It fosters patient safety, quality care, collaboration and the advancement of acupuncture as a respected health care modality.

If you are interested in becoming a Doctor of Acupuncture, it is essential to carefully research and consider the specific doctorate programs available in your region, as program quality can vary widely. Just be sure to evaluate the curriculum, faculty qualifications, clinical opportunities and the program鈥檚 reputation within the acupuncture community before deciding about pursuing a particular institution.

If you are beginning your first-professional education journey, take the next step toward becoming a Doctor of Acupuncture at 911爆料. If you already have a master鈥檚 degree in acupuncture or Oriental Medicine, our听Doctor of Acupuncture Completion Program听(DAc-C) is perfect for you! The DAc-C program can be completed in as few as three trimesters or one year of study and is completely online, so you can finish each term from the comfort of your own home.

How to Tell the Difference Between a Fad Diet & a Food Movement /how-to-tell-the-difference-between-a-fad-diet-a-food-movement/ Thu, 29 Jan 2026 22:05:47 +0000 /?p=240496 Although definitions may vary slightly, what many can agree on as 鈥渇ad diets鈥 are when an individual nutritionally adheres to a set diet in order to lose weight in a brief period of time. Although definitions may vary slightly, what many can agree on as 鈥渇ad diets鈥 are when an individual nutritionally adheres to a set diet in order to lose weight in a brief period of time. This said diet usually lacks overall sustainability, long term health benefits, or focuses on any other aspect of health promotion like exercise. Food movements on the other hand take into consideration research and apply the principles to everyday life, making a sustainable change or changes for the betterment of life and health. The short term goals of both might be to lose weight, but the long-term goal of a food movement is to create a healthy lifestyle.

Why the distinction?

It鈥檚 important to recognize there may be a relationship between the two, but fad diets and food movements cannot be viewed as virtually interchangeable. Both have the ability to shape social trends about health and nutrition in general, but healthy nutrition is an asset. Reckless or inadequate diet plans may actually be harmful to those desperate for solutions. Many people seek a food movement because they are seeking out a sustainable, identifiable change in their life for an overall benefit, other than just weight loss.

If it sounds too good to be true 鈥 it probably is. Here are some important factors all fad diets have in common:

They promote fast weight loss.

A quick fix by definition does not create a lasting solution. In fact, some sources suggest听听can even make you heavier and unhealthier. Healthy nutrition plans call for weight loss of between one, and usually not more than two pounds per week. Any more than this is water, and in addition, you鈥檒l regain the weight as soon as you return to your 鈥渞egular鈥 eating patterns. Depriving your body of certain nutrients can also lead to harmful deficiencies.

When it comes to fad diets in general, the听听of weight loss peaks within six months after the start of beginning a new plan, with 50 percent of patients returning to their original weight within in about five years 鈥 often less.

Of even greater concern is the crash diet. Crash diets, as the name implies, are extreme. They tend to promise weight loss even faster (sometimes in three to seven days!) and promote drastic caloric reductions.

The rebound affect 鈥 why fad diets lend themselves to participants returning to a previous way of eating.

Fad diets might consider key principles of nutrition, but fall short on the big picture of educating individuals on overall health benefits. Yes, calorie restriction will likely lead to weight loss, just as much as consuming extra calories will lead to weight gain.

But what is learned? In the 10+ years I have been studying nutrition, what has stuck with me is the more education someone has, the less likely it is they will return to their old habits. The more I educate patients on what happens inside the body when food items are consumed, the more likely they are to refrain from that food or consume more of it. That鈥檚 not saying they never return to foods avoided, but they鈥檙e more educated about it and its effects on their own bodies.

Many rules, unlimited quantities, and strange combinations of foods.

Remember the听grapefruit-only听补苍诲听cabbage soup-only diets? Can you really eat this way for the rest of your life? If the answer is no, the plan won鈥檛 be sustainable. Chances are you鈥檒l tire of it quickly and won鈥檛 be able to stick with it. It鈥檚 hard to commit to a boring food plan, and you could deprive yourself of important nutrients.

Looking at key elements of any fad diet might help you see why it might be effective in the short term. Let鈥檚 take the听cabbage soup diet听as an example. Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable which promotes digestion and is liver and gut supportive. The liver is the primary organ which tells the body to either store a food as fat, use it as fuel or eliminate it from the body. So, when you eat soup where the primary ingredient is liver supportive, you are increasing the body鈥檚 own mechanism to properly digest and either store or eliminate fat. But let鈥檚 not see this as the only take away. This is a low-fat, high fiber diet, which mainly focuses on calorie restriction. I love cabbage as much as the next person, but there is no way I could eat cabbage soup two-three times a day as prescribed in the diet long term!

They provide limited health benefits.

As mentioned previously, fad diets mainly promise weight loss. Often, they lack any other identifiable changes in health; however, that鈥檚 not to say there aren鈥檛 positive health side effects which come with losing weight. Often individuals aren鈥檛 seeking a fad diet to help them with improvement of their thyroid function, to decrease their cholesterol, improve their heart health, quality of sleep, acid reflux, digestion, mental acuity or even infertility, yet I鈥檓 sure there are times those benefits may occur.

So, what听IS听a Food Movement?

Although definitions vary from source to source, food movements have been evolving over the last few decades and emphasize a food prescriptive way to eliminate what鈥檚 鈥渘ot real鈥 and focus on the wholeness of food. Food movements may encourage eating local, sustainable, organic, non-GMO, chemical-free food, but one could say the main emphasis is really to eliminate or avoid processed and industrial packaged foods and focus on the simplest forms of food. Simply stated, food movements are centered around eating real food and focus on health benefits rather than just weight loss.

The age old saying, an apple a day keeps the doctor away has its roots in the late 1800s to early 1900s. But is an apple today the same as an apple 1,000 or even 100 years ago? Food movements take into consideration all of the elements of what we are eating. It鈥檚 not just about the apple, but how is this apple germinated, is it free of pesticides and GMOs, and what is the overall nutritional value and content it delivers to the individual? No one who prescribes to a food movement way of life will say an apple is 鈥渦nhealthy鈥 just because it isn鈥檛 organic, but the greater picture looks at the elements which may make the apple not as nutritionally beneficial for an individual and seeks to maximize its benefits.

Different individuals, different needs.

Nutrition and health care solutions are unique and a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective or safe. One important item to recognize is that I鈥檓 not diet shaming anyone for their choices to improve their life. What I am doing is trying to provide at a minimum a few principles necessary to understand there is something to changing your lifestyle to improve your health. When you take the time to educate yourself and see the benefits of how a food movement way of living can affect your own life, it is hard to go backward.

With the school year soon under way, you may be concerned about your child鈥檚 health. Germs spread easily in classroom environments. As the temperatures get colder, viruses tend to survive and spread more too.

Due to their underdeveloped immune systems, children get sick much more often than adults, as often as听. However, there are many natural strategies that you can take to try and reduce how often your child gets sick. Here are some tips on keeping your child in optimal health this school year:

1) The right diet and nutrition can go a long way.

While challenging for picky eaters, a good diet and nutrition is vital to keeping your child healthy. Whether it鈥檚 in meals or snacks, try to work in fruits and vegetables wherever you can. Adequate amounts of protein are also important.

There are plenty of foods that should be avoided, too. In addition to sugar, children today tend to eat too many carbohydrates. It鈥檚 best to limit bread, starches and sugar. You should also focus on preparing whole foods rather than heavily processed ones.

Additionally, it鈥檚 important to educate your children about which foods are snacks versus treats. For example, food like cookies are treats that need to be limited. It might seem simple, but setting up that thought process early can help immensely as a child grows and develops.

2) Try adding fish oil to their daily vitamin routine.

Children often take multivitamins daily to ensure they are getting necessary nutrients. One ingredient that鈥檚 often missing is Omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to promoting听 and good gut health, according to a听2019 study, some specific . Other studies have shown that fish oil may even help with听听(ADHD) and other听.

Therefore, adding fish oil to your child鈥檚 daily vitamin routine is a great way to improve many aspects of your child鈥檚 health. Fish oil doesn鈥檛 have to be taken in the form of a pill, either. You can find fish oil in the form of a liquid that is flavored and made specifically for children.

3) Ensure your child is getting enough sleep.

Sleep is an essential element to good health. If your child is getting less than the recommended hours, it can lead to serious health issues, some of which are directly tied to immune function.听Studies听show that and even their response to vaccination. This is because sleep affects the body鈥檚 ability to produce proteins called cytokines, which help fight infection and reduce inflammation.

Childhood is the best time to learn good sleep habits. If children start with bad habits, they can snowball and cause the development of other sleep issues. Children, and even teenagers, need more hours of sleep than adults. The (CDC) recommends the following number hours of sleep needed per day:

  • Newborns (0 to 3 months): 14 鈥 17 hours
  • Infants (4 to 12 months): 12 鈥 16 hours (including naps)
  • Toddlers (1 to 2 years): 11 鈥 14 hours (including naps)
  • Preschoolers (3 to 5 years): 10 鈥 13 hours (including naps)
  • School Age (6 to 12 years): 9 鈥 12 hours
  • Teens (13 to 17 years): 8 鈥 10 hours
  • Adults (18 to 60 years): 7+ hours
  • Adults (61 to 64 years): 7 鈥 9 hours
  • Adults (65+): 7 鈥 8 hours

4) Keep track of screen time.

It can be easy to lose track of how long your child is spending in front of screens, whether it鈥檚 their cell phone, computer or television. However, these devices can have a profound effect on the mind and body.

According to the听听(AACAP), too much screen time can lead to mood, sleep and weight problems along with lower grades in school and body image issues. The AACAP recommends varying amounts of screen time depending on age. For children 2-5, non-educational screen time should be limited to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on weekend days. While there鈥檚 no limit recommended for children 6 and older, the AACAP recommends teaching them healthy habits.

Some of these healthy habits include turning off all screens during family meals and outings and not using screens as pacifiers, babysitters or to stop tantrums. Screens should also be turned off and removed from bedrooms 30-60 minutes before bedtime.

5) Stay active with fun family activities.

When summer ends and children spend more time inside, it can become more difficult to keep them active. In addition to outdoor activities, there are many physical games that can be played inside to keep them moving. You can try .

You can also try out activities that promote fine motor skills and dexterity like puzzles, painting and other crafts. Another way to keep them active is by getting them involved with meal prep and cooking. Even cooking a batch of cookies once a week for the family to enjoy can be a great activity that teaches many skills.

6) Consider getting your child adjusted.

Children of any age, from newborn and older, can benefit from getting adjusted. Chiropractic physicians who specialize in pediatrics tend to focus on activating and taking stress off the parasympathetic nervous system, which can help the body function better in general.

Overall, chiropractic physicians can help with a lot of common childhood complaints like constipation, acid reflux, sleep issues, ADHD, ear infections, sensory concerns, etc. As with the rest of their patients, chiropractic physicians will take an听individualized, whole body approach听to improve your child鈥檚 health challenges.

At 911爆料 University, students learn how to treat pediatric populations. If you鈥檙e interested in working with children and want to learn more, read about one 911爆料 alumna who has started a successful career in this specialty since graduating in 2021.

Bug Bites and Stings

Prevention:听Apply bug spray before playing outside; avoid mosquitoes by staying inside at dawn and dusk; avoid or remove still water from around your home (such as buckets, or planters); wash with citronella soap and take B Vitamins to help prevent attracting mosquitoes to your skin.

Natural/Naturopathic Remedies

  • Aloe Vera 鈥听Contains more than 130 active compounds and 34 amino acids beneficial for skin.
  • Apis mellifica 鈥听For swelling and itching.
  • Basil 鈥听Contains camphor and thymol, two compounds that can relieve itching. Crush up some fresh herb and apply directly to the bite, or buy the essential oil.
  • Vitamin C 鈥听To reduce allergic response.
  • Calendula 鈥听Contains soothing, moisturizing and rejuvenating properties.
  • Chamomile 鈥听Used in a tea or applied to the skin. Rich in the bioflavonoids apigenin, luteolin and quercetin.
  • Cinnamon 鈥听In addition to repelling mosquitos, cinnamon has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • Cucumbers 鈥听Helpful for reducing swelling.

  • Peppermint 鈥听Its cooling sensation can block other sensations, such as itching, providing temporary relief. Its essential oil, or crushed, fresh leaves will do.

Ticks

笔谤别惫别苍迟颈辞苍:听Wear a hat, long-sleeved and long pant clothing, as well as high socks; avoid wooded and brushy areas; walk in the center of trails; spray tick repellent on clothing and shoes听before听going outdoors and always wear shoes鈥搉o bare feet or sandals!听Helpful hint:听Wear light colored clothing, it makes ticks easier to see.

After you come back inside:

  • Bathe or shower听as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks.
  • Conduct a full-body check.听Check for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and especially in the hair.
  • Examine gear and pets.听Ticks can hide in clothing and on pets, then attach to another person later. Carefully examine pets, coats and day packs.
  • Tumble dry clothes听in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on dry clothing.听If the clothes are damp, additional time may be needed.
If the clothes require washing first, hot water is recommended. Cold and medium temperature water will not kill ticks effectively.听If the clothes cannot be washed in hot water, tumble dry on low heat for 90 minutes or high heat for 60 minutes. The clothes should be warm and completely dry.

The post Five Reasons Why a Naturopathic Medicine Education Should Be Hands-on appeared first on 911爆料.

]]>
In today鈥檚 increasingly virtual world, many degree programs have permanently gone online. Health care, however, has largely remained an exception. No matter what the discipline, health care is inherently hands-on. Therefore, it is important that your naturopathic medicine education is hands-on too. Not only does hands-on learning help you prepare for a hands-on profession, but it also often makes the coursework easier to understand and more enjoyable to learn.

At 911爆料 University of Health Sciences (911爆料), students have a long list of opportunities for hands-on learning. Outside of the classroom, 911爆料 students have access to听clinical opportunities听both on-campus at the 911爆料 Whole Health Center clinic and at other busy clinics throughout the nation.

911爆料 has worked to keep a variety of hands-on opportunities available, because it recognizes the impact these opportunities have on preparing students for practice. Here are four important reasons why a naturopathic medicine education should be hands-on.

1) You鈥檒l gain a deeper understanding of your coursework

One of the most hands-on aspects of aStudents measuring naturopathic medicine in dispensary naturopathic medicine education at 911爆料 is the full-year clinical internship. Our on-campus Whole Health Center听features a听hydrotherapy suite听补苍诲听large herbal and supplement dispensary, allowing students to work with advanced treatment tools and prepare remedies and supplements. Another major hands-on component of the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) program is a full year of human dissection at the听state-of-the-art anatomy lab.

Compared to a curriculum that consists solely of lectures, doing this kind of hands-on work keeps you both engaged and attentive. It allows you to not only retain more information, but to have a deeper understanding of what you鈥檙e learning and how it applies to the work you鈥檒l be performing in your profession.

2) Learning will be more enjoyable

In addition to focusing on the body鈥檚 own healing power, naturopathic medicine uses less-invasive techniques, including botanical remedies, to treat various health conditions. As part of your coursework in ND program, you鈥檒l have the chance to learn about various botanicals and their potential uses in health care not just in the classroom, but first-hand in the student-led botanical garden located on campus.

Enabling students to physically touch, feel and smell the plants they study makes the entire process much more enjoyable than simply reading about them in a textbook. The听听is maintained on an entirely volunteer basis and has remained popular among students for more than听10 years. On top of being enjoyable, students report that working in the garden helps them stay relaxed during mid-terms and finals, too.

3) You鈥檒l feel more accomplished

A common reason students enter into the health care field is for the ability to make a difference in a patient鈥檚 life. Since working hands-on allows you to see results first-hand, you will be able to take more pride in the work you do every day. You鈥檒l feel more motivated and excited to begin each day.

911爆料 offers a wide array of naturopathic medicine hands-on clinical opportunities, including internships and preceptorships, encouraging students to assist various types of patient populations.

If you鈥檙e looking to make a difference in a patients鈥 lives, treating the medically underserved and sometimes diverse populations can help you feel more accomplished in your work.

4) It can help you decide which specialty to pursue

Within the field of naturopathic medicine, there are several different specialties you can pursue鈥搘hether it鈥檚 pediatric, women鈥檚 health care, cancer treatment or homeopathy. The best way to decide which is best for you isn鈥檛 necessarily by reading a textbook or reviewing a list of possible options. Performing the work of your future profession is a much more superior way of helping you decide what鈥檚 right for your career.

Putting what you learn into practice will allow you to identify what you enjoy and consider your strengths and weaknesses. For example, a听homeopathy rotation听at the听听(CIH) is a great way to explore constitutional homeopathic case-taking and prescribing. At CIH, students work alongside Timothy Fior, MD, and听Lisa Krebs, ND, a 911爆料 University alumna, who are both in practice at CIH.

Additionally, at the Whole Health Center on campus, you鈥檒l work alongside various other health professionals such as doctors of chiropractic and acupuncture & herbal medicine practitioners. You鈥檒l also treat patients using various modalities and specialties such as听hydrotherapy听and botanical medicine. Even before you graduate, you鈥檒l be able to get a taste of various potential career paths.

5) You鈥檒l be able to work closely with and learn from fellow students

On a weekly basis during the trimester, ND students engage in Grand Rounds, a medical tradition that involves exploring a clinical question usually through recent cases encountered at the on-campus clinic or other internship work. These interactive group sessions consist of fellow interns presenting patient cases and the treatment methods they utilized to treat them. For years, Grand Rounds has helped students learn from each other鈥檚 unique experiences.

From time to time, Grand Rounds has also hosted various experts who share their own patient experiences. Whether it鈥檚 from students, visiting experts or our own expert faculty, at 911爆料, you鈥檒l be able to learn from a variety of engaging and helpful sources.

911爆料 is not alone in recognizing the importance of hands-on learning. 听The states that 听also recognize that a high-quality ND education must be rigorous and hands-on. In order to sit for the exam required to qualify for licensure, NDs must graduate from a program accredited by The Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). Online ND programs are not accredited, thus 鈥 those programs do not qualify individuals for licensure.

We believe that not only听what听you learn, but the听way听you learn, can greatly impact how you perform in your future profession. The various hands-on opportunities at 911爆料 are meant to elevate your learning experience, allowing you to take what you learn in the classrooms and apply it with confidence to real patients as an intern and eventually as a professional physician.

If you鈥檙e looking for an education that鈥檚 as hands-on as possible, 911爆料 University provides some of the most unique hands-on opportunities available. To learn more about the 911爆料 naturopathic medicine program, visit the听911爆料 website.

This blog was first published in March 2018 by 911爆料 University of Health Sciences alumna Shelby Plante, 鈥13.

Today鈥檚 young athletes work harder, longer hours and push through injury more than ever before.

Traveling sports start at a younger age, which usually means more practices per week and tournaments multiple weekends per month. Tee ball starts by age 4. Travel baseball and football begins by age 8. Kids committing to one sport, also called specializing, is seen by middle school.

According to one , athletes who specialize at a younger age are injured more often. Whether or not you agree with this practice, the fact is, it鈥檚 happening all over the country. Chiropractic medicine has a real niche in this environment as well as the knowledge base to treat these kinds of athletes.

In this post, we will discuss four ways that chiropractic medicine can provide long-lasting benefits to young athletes.

  1. Chiropractic treatments can decrease recovery time.

Normal wear and tear occurs often to a healthy athlete鈥檚 body. A baseball pitcher uses a repetitive throwing motion. A volleyball player jumps, repeatedly blocking and hitting. A football player takes multiple body blows during a single game. At some point during a season, usually multiple times, an athlete experiences muscle fatigue and soreness. There are usually only one to two days between practices/games, and at times athletes need more than rest to get them game-ready.

After practice or game, a chiropractic physician may utilize soft tissue techniques such as massage or instrument assisted soft tissue techniques to make the tissue more moveable and relaxed, decrease lactic acid, and improve blood flow. Physiotherapy equipment such as ultrasound or cold laser may be utilized to help with areas that have exceptionally high inflammation. An adjustment may be provided to improve joint mobility. Recommendations for rehydrating properly and dietary adjustments to assist with athletic recovery may also be discussed.

Combining these options or others not discussed above, based off the chiropractic physician鈥檚 expertise, will help athletes recover and be better prepared for the next practice or game.

  1. Chiropractic treatments can assist in injury repair.

Each sport has body areas that are more prone to injury due to the stress the sport puts on the area. According to the听, dancers most commonly experience leg injuries, golfers experience arm injuries, lacrosse players experience knee issues and muscular strains 鈥 the list of sports injuries go on through each youth sport.

Once an injury occurs, the athlete and family often want to return to their sport as quickly as possible. Many of these techniques discussed earlier can be modified by intensity and duration to assist in injury repair.

Adjusting joint segments that are no longer moving can enhance mechanical motion. Soft tissue techniques will improve muscle tone and blood flow to injured areas as well as decrease adhesions or build up around injured areas. Ultrasound and cold laser, among other therapy options, can significantly reduce inflammation and pain levels felt by the athlete. In addition,听Kinesio Taping听can provide support and certain taping techniques can assist in blood flow to the injured area.

Most importantly, chiropractic physicians are trained to understand anatomical and physiological response to movement patterns, as well as optimal treatment options. It is imperative that the athlete鈥檚 doctor has an intimate understanding of injury repair, as well as proper guidelines for safely returning the athlete to his or her sport.

  1. Chiropractic treatments can lead to optimal wellness.

Taking care of an athlete鈥檚 body should not begin the first day of practice or after the first tournament of the season. Athletes should focus on body awareness, health, and optimal function year round.

A chiropractic physician can assist an athlete in proper diet and nutrition, sleep guidelines, as well as proper training strategies that should be utilized as a life-long habit. Proper spinal and extremity alignment through adjustments, body mechanic evaluation, and gait analysis can assist with muscular patterns and development that are essential in a developing youth athlete. By continually keeping an athlete鈥檚 body in his or her healthiest form, he or she will train more efficiently and effectively year round.

  1. Chiropractic medicine plays a vital role in supporting the athlete as a whole.听

With youth athletes training year-round and specializing at a younger age, there should be a team in place to assist the athlete in being the best he or she can be. Although youth sports do not have a formal medical team established like college or professional sports teams, a youth athlete should have a support team that is entrusted with the care of the athlete.

For example, a trainer helps with muscle development and ligament/tendon stability, while the coach teaches the young athlete how to play a sport and develop a love for the game. A chiropractic physician, on the other hand, plays a vital role in facilitating whole body wellness. Before beginning a sport, the child鈥檚 physician should complete a thorough physical exam to ensure the child is healthy enough to participate in the activity. Some states allow the primary care physician to be a chiropractor. Other states have differing guidelines. Check your state for specific requirements.

Parents are another important part of a young athlete鈥檚 support team, and must monitor overuse, over-activity, and over-training. They must also make sure the athlete鈥檚 physicians, coaches, and trainers are current on the health of the athlete and are constantly working in unison.

]]>
Patients seeking acupuncture might be confused when they see advertising for different 鈥渟tyles鈥 of acupuncture, such as Korean acupuncture, Japanese-style acupuncture or traditional Chinese acupuncture.

What is the difference? Are they all effective?

Dr Kwon instructs an intern鈥淛apanese, Korean and Chinese acupuncture all have their foundations in traditional Chinese medicine, and all are very effective,鈥 said听Yihyun Kwon, PhD, DC, MSOM, LAc and Professor of Clinical Sciences at 911爆料 University of Health Sciences (911爆料). 鈥淗ow acupuncture evolved in different regions of Asia reflects the culture and history of each region.鈥

Chinese Acupuncture
The acupuncture profession looks to China as the standard traditional model. In China, acupuncturists use big needles with a greater depth of insertion. They are trying to stimulate what is called the 鈥淒e Qi鈥 sensation, or 鈥渁rrival of Qi鈥 鈥 life energy flowing through the body. A Chinese acupuncturist will try to enhance that sensation by gently rotating the needle. On a microscopic level, the surface of a Chinese needle is very rough, so patients will definitely feel the needle when it is inserted. This heightens the De Qi response.

鈥淐urrent research shows that the De Qi sensation is really important,鈥 said Dr. Kwon. 鈥淭here is a better outcome after treatment.鈥

The Chinese also use more needles and insert them into a wider area of the body.

Additionally, Taiwan has a unique acupuncture system as well, called 鈥淭ung鈥 acupuncture. It uses a completely different system with different points. The majority of points are closely located to bones, joints and nerves. The Tung system provides excellent and quick results for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

Japanese Acupuncture
Dr. Kim working with students in the cadaver lab鈥淭he Japanese use thinner needles, and a gentler technique with shallow insertion. Their diagnostic assessment relies heavily on palpation of the abdomen, back and various pulses along the meridian system. In fact, Japanese style acupuncture is often called 鈥榤eridian acupuncture鈥 for this reason,鈥 said Hyundo Kim, PhD, MSOM, LAc and听Assistant Dean of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine at 911爆料.

Western medicine moved into Japan much earlier than it did in other Asian countries through Dutch influence in the 1600s. Because of this, Japan has always had more of an interest in Western medicine than Asian medicine. Japan even prohibited Asian medicine under Emperor Meiji in the late 1800s. Later, acupuncture was finally allowed once again, but only as an occupation for the blind.

鈥淭his is why their style developed diagnostic methods that relied on palpation rather than sight 鈥 feeling the abdomen, back and meridian pulses rather than looking at visual characteristics of the tongue, eyes or fingernails,鈥 said Dr. Kim. 听鈥淭his is also why they use a lot of acupressure as well, as this technique was very adaptable to blind practitioners.鈥

Korean Acupuncture
Diagnosis in Korean acupuncture is focused on a full constitutional analysis, an old concept rooted in Chinese medicine. A constitutional diagnosis requires a completely separate book of prescriptions. Korean acupuncture also focuses on the extremities, like the hand or ear.

Most of the standard acupuncture layouts in Korea use only four needles. In fact, Korean acupuncture is often called 鈥榝our-needle鈥 technique, or Sa-am technique for this reason.

鈥淭he four needles are split two and two 鈥 two needles sedate or reduce excess Qi in one organ system, while two other needles tonify or increase Qi in a second organ system,鈥 explained Dr. Kwon. 鈥淭his balancing concept is the foundation behind four-needle acupuncture.鈥

鈥淓ven though China and Korea border each other, their scholars did not always communicate. That鈥檚 why their acupuncture and medical practices differ slightly. Also, some herbs used in Chinese medicine cannot grow in Korea鈥檚 climate. Many of the Korean herbal medicine formulas will thus add or substitute herbs that have similar effects but are more common in the Korean climate,鈥 he continued.

911爆料 University鈥檚 Approach
鈥淗ere at 911爆料, our foundation is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as all major styles are.听 While we provide a strong basis in TCM, we also give our students a taste of these other styles so that later, if they choose, they can go deeper on their own according to their interests,鈥 said Dr. Kim. 鈥淲e also offer in-depth听post-graduate courses听in more focused styles of acupuncture, such as Korean hand acupuncture technique.鈥

Once you decide that you are interested in a career in Naturopathic Medicine, you鈥檒l be faced with the task of choosing a program that will best prepare you to听become a successful naturopathic physician. Not all naturopathic medicine programs are created equally. While most schools will give you training in naturopathic therapies, the caliber, depth and rigor of the program can vary.

Below are five factors you should consider before choosing a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) program:

  1. Dedicated to naturopathic philosophy

Unlike allopathic medicine practitioners (MDs, DOs) who are focused on diagnosing and treating disease based on a patient鈥檚 symptoms, naturopathic physicians look for the root cause of disease in order to restore proper function and return the body to optimal health. Many of the therapies support the body鈥檚 intrinsic self-repair mechanisms. This is the traditional naturopathic philosophy that grounds our听naturopathic medicine program.

At 911爆料 University, we want to do more than simply teach this philosophy to our students, we want it to continually inform their work as practitioners. That鈥檚 why we train students to focus on treating the individual rather than the disease. In other words, we do not want them to simply treat their patient鈥檚 symptoms through naturopathic modalities (i.e. homeopathic remedies, hydrotherapy, etc), but to instead look for underlying imbalances and determine what is necessary to support the natural healing process. 911爆料 University teaches the six naturopathic medicine principles: First Do No Harm; Treat the Whole Person; Identify and Treat the Causes; The Healing Power of Nature; Doctor as Teacher and Prevention. We also take the students further into Naturopathic Clinical Theory, which equips them with models for case analysis and treatment, and helps them to apply the principles in action. We feel strongly that this comprehensive approach prepares our graduates to be exceptional diagnosticians and physicians.

  1. A rigorous, broad-scope curriculum

A rigorous curriculum that provides a strong foundation in basic sciences and clinical sciences is important. At 911爆料, we offer an excellent听basic sciences听curriculum, where in addition to coursework, students learn anatomy and physiology through full-cadaver dissection in our gross anatomy laboratory. Beginning early in the curriculum, students learn important skills in diagnosing patient conditions, performing physical exams, and progressively prescribing and performing naturopathic treatments from top-notch faculty in听clinical science听classes. Students at 911爆料 also learn about business management through practice management coursework including business planning and marketing courses.

It is also essential for students to have a strong听clinical internship听which provides real-life experiences with patients. 听That is why 911爆料 students complete a one-year clinical internship at the on-campus whole health center where they are exposed to a variety of patient conditions and work with clinicians to better understand diagnosis and treatment.

  1. A focus on integrative medicine and collaborative learning

While NDs are trained to be primary care physicians, they can also work with MDs, DOs, DCs and other medical specialists, co-managing patient cases as part of an integrative medical team.

911爆料 offers a campus dedicated to integrative medicine. You鈥檒l study and work side-by-side with students and faculty from the chiropractic medicine, and acupuncture and herbal medicine programs. Working as a student with other medical students and professionals provides invaluable experience and understanding. After graduation, you鈥檒l be better able to establish strong referral networks with other physicians and gain respect in the medical community. Most of all, you鈥檒l be able to provide better advice and care for your future patients.

At 911爆料, ND students not only receive a truly integrated medical education, but they have the ability to get听multiple degrees听in different kinds of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) disciplines, allowing them to expand their skill set and increase their earning potential. Our students have a rare option to earn a second or third degree and save both time and money in the process.

  1. Accreditation

Accreditation is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a naturopathic medicine school. Why? There are unaccredited online and sub-standard educational programs out there that prey on unsuspecting students. An online or mail order program simply cannot offer the education and training you need to become a qualified licensed physician. A student听must听graduate from a school accredited by the (CNME) in order to get licensure for practice. 911爆料 University has both regional as well as programmatic (CNME) accreditation for its naturopathic medicine program.

  1. Campus facilities dedicated to student success

It important to choose a school that invests in its students鈥 success and prepares them to confidently enter the health care industry. 911爆料 University provides a campus that helps students thrive. For example:

  • Top of the line gross听anatomy lab听where students learn human anatomy through full-cadaver dissection
  • On-campus听Whole Health Center听clinic provides students the opportunity to work side-by-side with other health care students and practitioners in this integrative setting
  • State-of-the-art听Hydrotherapy Suite听where students treat patients using the therapeutic benefits of water
  • Large, well-stocked听herbal dispensary, where students learn how to correctly choose and prepare botanical medicines, homeopathic remedies, physician-grade vitamins, whole food supplements, probiotics and more.
  • Botanical garden听where students themselves plant and care for a variety of herbs and plants in order to better understand their medicinal and therapeutic properties

We hope this post was helpful for those of you considering an education in naturopathic medicine. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about our programs or the 911爆料 student experience.

A common misconception about chiropractic physicians is that they only treat the back and musculoskeletal issues. At 911爆料 University of Health Sciences, students in the chiropractic medicine program are not only trained to treat the whole body, they also have the chance to explore many unique patient populations and health care specialties.

911爆料 offers a wide variety of classes, clubs, preceptorships and other opportunities to help give you a taste of several different specialties within the chiropractic field. If you鈥檙e interested in chiropractic medicine and thinking about a career focused on one specific health issue or patient population, here are a few specialties you might want to consider:

Veteran hospitals

Veteran (VA) hospitals听are among the many integrated health care centers that continue to add chiropractors onto their medical teams. According to Daniel Tominello, DC, a staff chiropractor at the John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Detroit, chiropractic physicians are valuable because they help to lower health care costs while providing more efficient treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and pain.

Compared to what is usually seen in private practice, chiropractic physicians often handle more comorbidities and complex cases at VA hospitals. Various disciplines also work together on one team. The Detroit VA, for example, has an Integrated Clinic Services team, which is comprised of at least one chiropractic physician, pain psychologist, acupuncturist, yoga expert, pain specialist medical doctor and Masters-level nurse practitioners, who all work together to bring relief to chronic pain patients.

To help prepare students for this specialty, 911爆料 provides the opportunity to work at听five different Veteran hospitals听across the country as part of a preceptorship program.

Occupational health

Occupational health offers chiropractic physicians the chance to treat workers across multiple fields. Chiropractic physicians within this kind of specialty typically work with industries that have the highest rates of worker injuries such as agriculture, forestry, fishing, construction, manufacturing and transportation. However, occupational health chiropractors can also work in corporate offices, providing ergonomic services.

Along with treating workers on-site, occupational health chiropractors are expected to help prevent injuries, too. They often provide full-time consultation on ergonomic office design, nutrition and lifestyle choices. Chiropractic physicians can also help with pre-placement physicals.

911爆料 alum听Bethany Dixon, DC, RD, LDN, CME, for example, works within the transportation industry helping treat and prevent injuries among truck drivers. Since truck drivers are generally unable to take pain killers for back pain, chiropractic medicine is an effective, more natural alternative. In addition to performing physicals and adjustments, Dr. Dixon also counsels her patients on diet and nutrition.

Because the trucking industry is so large, she鈥檚 never been worried about having too small of a patient base.

鈥淐hiropractic is very popular with the drivers,鈥 she said. 鈥淗aving somewhere to go for them to be taken care of is very much appreciated by this population.听 They often feel forgotten, and they become very loyal to you as a provider once they know you care.鈥

Pediatrics

Chiropractic medicine isn鈥檛 just suitable for adults, it can have a profound impact on children, too. Many 911爆料 graduates have had successful careers treating children whether it鈥檚 related to high school sports or activities of younger children. 2021 graduate听Liron Saletsky, DC, immediately started her career in pediatrics after completing her program.

鈥淧eople often ask why do I see kiddos so early? The kid doesn鈥檛 have back pain. But there鈥檚 always some sort of stressors in our lives, whether it鈥檚 trauma, toxins or emotions, etc.,鈥 Dr. Saletsky said.

Chiropractic physicians can treat a number of ailments related to children including constipation, acid reflux, sleep problems, ear infections and tongue ties. Dr. Saletsky even treats newborns. During these appointments, one of the techniques she uses is feeling the tone of the nervous system and seeing how the body reacts to stress. She鈥檒l focus on the top of the neck and sacrum to stimulate the parasympathetic system, which helps activate the body鈥檚 rest and digest function.

鈥淎ctivating the parasympathetics helps with a lot of common complaints that continue through childhood,鈥 she said.

Prenatal & OBGYN

Today, you鈥檒l find many chiropractic medicine clinics that specialize in prenatal and post-partum care. These clinics often receive referrals from OBGYNs and midwives with patients suffering from low-back pain and other musculoskeletal issues. This natural, non-pharmaceutical approach also helps ensure optimal health of the mother and prevents babies from becoming breech, which is one of the most common reasons for a C-section.

Chiropractors usually treat pregnant women using the听听According to a听听completed by听听members, the technique has an 82% success rate in relieving the musculoskeletal causes of intrauterine constraint.

Sports Medicine

For today鈥檚 graduates, the future of chiropractic among top sporting events is bright. In the past 20 years, chiropractors have become much more commonplace among the medical staff of college and professional athletic teams.

According to 911爆料 Florida faculty听Carlo Guadagno, DC, CCSP 庐, ICSC, FICC, who has participated on the medical staff of numerous Olympic qualifying events, including the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, it was the athletes that made sure that chiropractic physicians were on staff and available to them.

Whether it鈥檚 professional athletes or high-school and younger level sports, chiropractors help athletes with a number of issues ranging from emergent situations to performance enhancement, and many musculoskeletal ailments. As a result, sports chiropractors require a wide range of skills.

Sports chiropractic isn鈥檛 about just treating the spine or providing an adjustment. Sometimes what鈥檚 needed is soft tissue work. Unlike working in a chiropractic clinic, the sports medical staff are also expected to be fluent in emergency medicine.

At 911爆料, students can gain these valuable skills in the ambulatory trauma class. Emergency medicine is also taught in 911爆料鈥檚 sports medicine class.

Women鈥檚 Health

Increased awareness about women鈥檚 health issues has led to this specialty gaining in popularity in recent years. Historically, research into women鈥檚 health issues has been underfunded, according to a听听However, new research is revealing the different ways women experience health issues like pain, stress and even heart disease, a leading cause of death.

With more women having children in their 30s, women are also seeking more assistance with fertility. Fibromyalgia is another health issue that doctors have begun to recognize as an illness, which predominantly effects women.

Chiropractic medicine is among the disciplines that can treat these issues.听 Some of the other conditions chiropractors address among women include menstrual cycle/dysmenorrhea, pelvic floor dysfunction and urinary incontinence, perimenopause/menopause, mental health, stress, and chronic pain.

911爆料 University of Health Sciences provides the curriculum, training, and extracurricular opportunities to prepare students for a number of different career paths within the chiropractic profession. Whether it鈥檚 at the听on-campus听Whole Health Center,听as part of their clinical training or a preceptorship, 911爆料 can help set you apart from the competition. Since 911爆料 offers multiple degree programs too, like acupuncture and naturopathic medicine, students can expand their skillset and benefit from additional career options.
