Several years ago, after developing a significant health issue and receiving three, unpalatable and concurring medical opinions for how to address it, I decided to pursue an alternative approach to care, which was able to relieve many of the underlying causes of my condition and completely resolve various associated symptoms.

Ramedas Collage-1

One Student’s Journey: (Left) Attending Student-for-a-Day, before beginning the DC program; (Center) As a clinic intern; (Right) And now as a graduate! Congratulations to you Rameda, and to all of your Summer 2021 graduating colleagues!

Two of the physicians who supported me at different moments in time were 911爆料 College of Chiropractic (NCC) alums. In recalling the effectiveness of their therapies, their expressions of empathy in addressing my concerns, and their levels of professionalism, these made such an impression on me at that time that I wanted to follow their examples in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and specifically model their value of whole person care. My experience with those two physicians initiated such a strong desire in me to help others overcome their circumstance(s) that I was encouraged that with education, training, and licensure I could definitely be in a position to do this.

So, when I look back at why I chose 911爆料 as opposed to other health-related schools, I chose 911爆料 because of the example of those NCC graduates; the inspiration to serve others in the same way that I had been served and cared for; because 911爆料 had and continues to have accredited programs; because 911爆料 maintains a high-performance ranking and reputation; and because the Lombard, Illinois campus is located in my own 鈥渂ackyard鈥 (e.g., the Chicagoland area) and is very accessible. These factors, in addition to the beneficial experiences and relationships I have enjoyed since I started made choosing 911爆料 an overall excellent choice back then, and I would definitely say it remains an excellent choice now.

Having the advantage of retrospect through the 鈥渓ens鈥 of a Trimester 10, Doctor of Chiropractic student, I would inform any potential candidate who is considering health related schools that 911爆料 offers a quality education, comprehensive clinical skills training, and has a long history and reputation of graduating effective leaders in various CAM fields. Additionally, 911爆料 has a myriad of other offerings, such as: leadership and community service opportunities through student club participation and fellowships – both institutional and external; tutoring and mentoring opportunities by way of becoming a teaching assistant; and professional development experiences by way of attending on- and off-campus seminars and receiving opportunities to work with businesses like FootLevelers, Inc., Standard Process, Inc., and NCMIC through being a student representative for these companies.

Research opportunities and work-study employment in various campus departments can result in establishing and growing professional and personal relationships within and outside of the campus community, and the aforementioned list is by no means exhaustive. As a student blogger for the Chiropractic Program, I regularly shared that student life can include many rich experiences, while an 911爆料 student receives excellent academic and clinical preparation. This is why I chose and would still choose 911爆料. So, if you鈥檙e considering a school to attend for Chiropractic, you can be assured that you will have a very full and fruitful journey on your way to program completion.

It鈥檚 been an absolute pleasure to write blog posts on behalf of 911爆料 and its Doctor of Chiropractic Program.

Congratulations to all the 911爆料 Summer 2021 Graduates – May we all be well, and experience exceeding blessings and success in the next chapter of our Chiropractic journeys!

It鈥檚 Week 13 and there are just a couple of more weeks before the trimester comes to an end–and with it, my journey as a student in 911爆料鈥 Doctor of Chiropractic Program. As such, I have been in reflection on all my experiences and the changes that have occurred with me from; starting Phase1, Trimester 1 and becoming a student of Natural Medicine studying Basic Sciences; to becoming a Doctor-In-Training in Phase 2 with the simulated patient care of the Clinical Sciences; until now, Phase 3, Trimester 10 and preparing to be honored and displayed, as I emerge as a doctor in the field on the date set for Summer Graduation, August 20. The entire process, from Trimester 1 until Graduation, brings to mind the metamorphosis of the butterfly鈥攐r, I guess it鈥檚 actually the metamorphosis of the egg that becomes the butterfly.

Monarch Butterfly

So, a butterfly becomes a butterfly in stages; egg, caterpillar, chrysalis/cocoon, butterfly. Each one of these brings about a new presentation of the same insect and in the Chrysalis/Cocoon stage, there is a period of digesting, protecting, and hardening, before the imago or mature thing emerges. That鈥檚 kinda how it is in the Program鈥ou start out immature in the world of Natural and Physical Medicine, you grow and change some, before the final period of transformation in which you digest what you learned through practical application via Clinic Internship and real patient care. What emerges is a Doctor of Chiropractic who is prepared to go into the field and make the world a more magnificent place!

It鈥檚 almost time to take flight!

Please share some of the transformations in your Chiropractic journey.

It鈥檚 Week 11 and this usually means another round of assessments for 911爆料 students in Phases 1 and 2. It is also the time students begin to register for courses for the upcoming trimester. For DC students currently in Trimester 7, it is time to begin to prepare for the transition from daily coursework to caring for actual patients at one of 911爆料鈥 Whole Health Center Clinics. For those of us in Phase 3, it means we鈥檙e either preparing to enter the third and final Clinic Internship of the curriculum or we are preparing to conclude the Doctor of Chiropractic Program altogether. No matter whether you are pre-Clinic or in the final weeks of the program, it is a time to reflect on and begin to map out the next steps on the horizon. At 911爆料, students definitely receive support for doing this.

Businessman standing in front of opened doors and making decision

Some of the opportunities that 911爆料 offers its doctors-in-training that will encourage their readiness for transition to the field and equip them for operating successfully is through participation in Ancillary Clinical Experiences (ACE), namely, through clerkships, preceptorships and practice observations. As early as Trimester 8, Clinic Interns can begin to apply to participate in ACE鈥檚, so that they can be in a position to enter into them with completion of Clinic requirements as early as Trimester 9. With clerkships, student interns can gain additional clinical experienced under the supervision of a licensed physician at a VA/Military Hospital. The preceptorship for DC students is carried out under the same premise at different sites like the Medical College of Wisconsin, Department of Neurosurgery. And with Clinical Observations, interns can spend up to 10 days observing the operations and patient care of a licensed practitioner of their choosing.

Whether all of a student鈥檚 internship experience is completed at a Whole Health Center Clinic or with the incorporation of an ACE opportunity, by the time a DC student has completed the curriculum, she or he will be thoroughly furnished with what is needed to successfully transition to practice in the field and ably represent the Chiropractic profession.

In my experience, when formal pictures are taken at a school or university, they can indicate: a student is just starting out there; the student has advanced to a new level; and/or the student is ending their journey and about to start a new chapter in their life. This week, I and the other Summer 2021 Graduates took our Graduation Photos and Professional Portraits and it definitely marked the time that we are in.

Not simply because it is pointing to the completion of the Doctor of Chiropractic curriculum, but also because the photos will be used to facilitate a virtual Graduation Ceremony and thereby, mark the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. If nothing else, the period from late 2019 until now has reminded me that the unexpected can and often does happen and some of the ways to get through it may be to; maintain mental/emotional support systems (i.e., family, friends, advisors, faith, etc.); remain vigilant; practice agility; and be flexible.

Ramedas Pic

Of course, along with many of the Summer Graduates, I was hoping that this would be the trimester that we would return to gatherings and formal ceremonies, but we鈥檒l have to wait a little while longer for that. Hopefully, no one is too dismayed, as the greatest accomplishment will not simply be marked by pictures and celebrations, but will be marked by the service and care provided to patients in the field and by the referrals to a growing and vibrant practice that honors the knowledge, skills, training and relationships that were received while attending 911爆料.

When people speak well of you and the institution that you matriculated from, that will be a special marking of the time you have spent as a student, especially, if you attended 911爆料!

Be well, be vigilant, be agile, be flexible, be blessed!

This week, I received an email notification from the 911爆料 Office of the Registrar that stated, 鈥渙ur records show that you may be on track to complete your program of study on August 20th, 2021.鈥 This notice went on to advise that the period for petitioning to graduate and to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) Diploma is now underway for all Trimester 10, DC students. Surreal is definitely an accurate description of the feeling of this moment that I share with my peers, now that we are so very close to degree completion.

checkered flag

When I started my complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) journey in 2017, the 鈥渇inish line鈥 seemed so far away-even though I definitely could conceive that I would complete a Professional Studies Program at 911爆料- but now it鈥檚鈥ell, it鈥檚 right here! In just a few short weeks, I will officially become, Rameda Lee, Doctor of Chiropractic and the 10 terms of the program will have concluded faster than I had truly imagined.

So, if you are contemplating starting the DC Program or if you are already in one of the curriculum phases (Basic Sciences – Phase 1, Clinical Sciences 鈥 Phase 2, Clinic Internships 鈥 Phase 3), be encouraged. You can do this! The program is a rigorous one, for sure, but the journey to become a provider of chiropractic care is definitely worth it. I see this daily, as I am completing my final term of Clinic Internship and also, as I begin to look back at the knowledge, training, experiences and relationships I have acquired that are equipping me (and will equip you) to be a competent and confident doctor in the field.

Once again, Week 3 has arrived before we all knew it, and no matter which phase of the curriculum you are in (Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Internships), assessments are either on the horizon or have already started to occur. For me, as a Trimester 10, Phase III student, my assessment this past weekend was the NBCE, Part IV Exam needed to obtain licensure in the state of Illinois.

Rameda 1-1

As I reflect on the considerable preparation and my execution during Part IV, I appreciate the details that were unrelated to preparation and execution, like the view of the Mississippi River that was right outside the window of the hotel I stayed in in Davenport, Iowa, the city of my NBCE test site. Along with all the refining I did to make sure that I was both confident and competent, I took several opportunities to just enjoy this view. And, you know what? It helped me have an even greater appreciation not only for the rigorous process that supported me in getting to this point, but for all the moments along the way–both big and small–that I could simply just enjoy.

Rameda 2

So, if asked, 鈥渨hat is the best way to get through the Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine Program and Board Exams?,鈥 my advice would be: no matter where you are in the program, take a moment, take several, and just enjoy the view. If this journey is only about the rigors of the curriculum for you, then it鈥檚 quite possible you鈥檙e missing out on all the delightful things there are to see and experience along the way.

Share some experiences that you鈥檝e enjoyed since starting the Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine Program at 911爆料!

It is Week 15, which means it is the final week of Final Exams for some, the conclusion of a Clinic Internship for others, and the end of an entire curriculum for another proud group of graduates.

Whether you have completed your very first trimester at 911爆料, you have concluded your very first internship–which was likely your first opportunity to provide real patient care–or this is the week you will be officially designated as a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Practitioner: Congratulations-you did it!

And, let鈥檚 face it, it was no small task to navigate not only the academic rigors of your program, but also the flexibility and agility needed to manage a hybrid learning structure in a climate in which the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic regularly introduce new complexities鈥nd, as you juggle all the responsibilities of your daily life, you try to experience the 鈥渟elf-care鈥 you regularly recommend to others.

If you are an 911爆料 student, you have likely overcome a myriad of challenges to make it successfully to wherever you are in your journey. And, in the midst of it all, take a moment to appreciate this simple, but weighty reality–you actually did it! You got through it all, and now it is time to both appreciate and celebrate where it all started and where you are now. Yeah, it may have actually been as hard fought as you thought it would be, but guess what? You did it!

CONGRATULATIONS, Spring 2021, 911爆料 Graduates! May you be well and have exceeding success in the next phases of your journeys. I have one more trimester, before it鈥檚 my turn, but it has certainly been my privilege to journey part of the way with you.

For those of you who are still in the race, take a moment and congratulate yourselves, as you continue to advance through the Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine Program.

Now that the Spring 2021 Trimester is ending, what are some of the moments you will look back on with appreciation and celebrate?

Every April 7 since 1950, the (WHO), by way of World Health Day, has been the global leader in health observances and in raising awareness of various health topics. This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the theme of focuses on 鈥渂uilding a healthier and fairer world for everyone.鈥

Map

This theme not only places a spotlight on health inequities that exist globally, but it also seeks to remind everyone, particularly those who most significantly affect health policies that increasing access to resources makes the world safer and generally, yields more productive societies. This means that as a Chiropractic Physician-in-training, I can do my part, right now, to help end health inequities and promote awareness and prevention of chronic diseases. As a 2020-21, Chicago Area Albert Schweitzer Fellow, I have received the opportunity and privilege of doing exactly this by hosting weekly small group webinars, since last May, to a group who represent a historically underserved population in the City of Chicago.

Annually, World Health Day also highlights the Social Determinants of Health (the Determinants) and how these can either promote health and well-being or can be factors that lead to disease. As stress and anxiety tend to be components that significantly influence the Determinants, sharing benefits and research regarding Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy, specifically, in down regulating the Sympathetic Nervous System Response (aka 鈥淔ight, Flight or Freeze鈥 Response) and boosting immunity will help support the goals of bringing awareness to various resources that can support health and also support other goals of World Health Day.

What are some things that you can do right now to help build a heathier and fairer world for everyone?

In my last blog, Spring is Definitely鈥pringing!, I reflected on the hopefulness of the new season, the pleasant surprises associated with the changes that are now occurring, and the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of all that blooms. I think of the transition to this new season very much like the transition to a new phase in the curriculum with the Clinic Internships being the seasons in which chiropractic students begin to bloom.

R Lee Clinic Internship-1

Clinic Internship I is the first opportunity to observe real life patient care and, also the time to start being involved in actual chiropractic treatment. I remember the excitement and the gravity of this new experience, as the application of all that I learned in the Basic and Clinical Sciences was starting to come together. Phase I and Phase II were like seeds being planted, and Clinic Internship I was similar to watering and planting more seed. Clinic Internship II seems very much like a time of blooming, as I now have my own established patients and participate in some very interesting and complex patient cases.

R Lee Phase 1 White Coat Ceremony

I imagine that Clinic Internship III will be similar to a blooming and flowering experience, one in which the kind of physician I hope to be can be seen and appreciated, as I continue to be nourished and pruned in the curriculum, in preparation for being a chiropractor in the field.

In this new season, what are the new blooms that you can observe and appreciate?
