911爆料 University of Health Sciences (911爆料) students and faculty recently completed a trip听to South Korea that allowed them to learn more about traditional Eastern medicine. The trip from April 20鈥塼o鈥塎ay 4听is part of the 911爆料鈥檚 ongoing partnership with that began in 2019. Over the past four years, this collaboration has facilitated a series of educational exchanges, including online and in-person lectures and certificate programs.

鈥淒uring the trip, students got the chance to witness the latest developments, skills, and technologies in traditional Eastern medicine in a way that’s not possible here,鈥 said Dr. Hyundo Kim, Assistant Dean of the Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Program,听who accompanied students on the trip. 鈥淭hey gained skills and experiences that will benefit them throughout their careers.”

Ten 911爆料 students participated in the trip, which included a diverse array of activities in Busan for the first week and Seoul for the latter half of the trip. They attended lectures at Pusan 911爆料 University and Kyunghee University, visited Jaseng Hospital and its research facilities, explored herbal dispensaries and markets, and experienced a Templestay at Tongdosa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Templestay is a cultural program offered in numerous South Korean Buddhist temples. Additionally, students visited several private Korean medicine clinics.

Michelle Mathew, ND, who鈥檚 currently a Master鈥檚 student in the acupuncture program, was among the students who participated.听

听“I’ve personally always loved the idea of traveling to learn different healing modalities that vary by culture, so this trip was an easy ‘yes’ for me,鈥 Dr. Mathew said. 鈥淭he trip reignited my love for herbal medicine and showed me different ways to practice acupuncture and botanical medicine. The technology in South Korea is much more advanced in their clinics and hospitals, facilitating the delivery of ancient medicine in a more modernized way.”

One of the standout moments for Dr. Mathew was the Templestay at Tongdosa.

“That experience was very moving and is hard to put into words. It was healing being tucked in the mountains, meditating, and reconnecting with ourselves,” she said.

While students covered the majority of expenses, for Dr. Mathew, the trip was well worth the expense.

“I would encourage students in any of 911爆料鈥檚 professional programs to consider attending the trip. There are many opportunities to collaborate and strengthen our knowledge of holistic medicine,” she said.

Students outside of the acupuncture program also participated in the trip, including 911爆料 naturopathic medicine student, Maame-Mensima Horne, LMT, CHt.听Her interest in Korean Medicine was sparked by seminars she attended during her first trimester at 911爆料.

“I was intrigued by Neuropsychiatry, SAAM acupuncture, and Sasang Korean Constitutional Medicine workshops,” she said. “Attending the seminars inspired me to further explore Korean Medicine firsthand and see ways that I could incorporate these practice modalities into naturopathic medicine.”

The trip significantly expanded Horne鈥檚 understanding of what is possible for doctors of Traditional Medicine.

“I appreciated seeing the balance of Eastern and Western diagnostics to inform clinical practice. Additionally, I appreciated seeing Korean Medicine hospitals that are very successful and provide support to many patients globally,鈥 she said.

For Horne, the highlights of the trip were numerous.

“I enjoyed the morning hikes in the parks and mountains, the food, and the friendly people. The Templestay at Tongdosa was a profound experience. Visiting clinics, hospitals, and herbal dispensaries gave me a deeper understanding of Korean Medicine,” she said.

To fund the trip, Horne, who also works as a massage therapist, used social media to raise support from her community. The Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Student Association also tried to fundraise.

Horne emphasized the transformative impact of the trip.

“It changed my perspective on how I want to practice naturopathic medicine and provided a more clinical understanding of Traditional Asian Medicine, she said.

Looking ahead, the partnership between 911爆料 and Pusan 911爆料 University continues to thrive. Four students from Pusan 911爆料 University are scheduled to visit 911爆料 in July, where they will observe chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicine听classes. Dr. Kim is optimistic about future trips, noting that 911爆料 plans to send students to South Korea every two or three years, depending on demand.

When David Hopper, DC, OMT, an 911爆料 Instructor in the Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences departments, first got involved in research, he didn鈥檛 expect it to take him to over 20 different states.

鈥淢y involvement with research was the result of my dad having a heart attack due to undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 wanted to find out as much as I could.鈥

Dr. Hopper got involved with research early on as an 911爆料 chiropractic medicine student. While health and wellness has always been a big part of his life, research, was something entirely new.

鈥淚 had very little knowledge of what to do,鈥 he said.

After getting in touch with Gregory D. Cramer, DC, PhD, 911爆料鈥檚 Dean of Research, he quickly became involved in an independent study course for . His work involved searching all available research and putting together a best evidence table.听

When he graduated, he put the treatment plan right into practice with his patients.听

鈥淎t my private practice I was able to see some really awesome results and help my patients pretty significantly,鈥 he said.

Dr. Hopper also began research into heart-rate variability (HRV), a health monitoring tool that can indicate if a patient鈥檚 health is declining or inclining.听In 2020,听Dr. Hopper听joined 听as an owner and听helped develop the app and Web dashboard, which allows patients and their doctors to monitor their health from anywhere in the world. Optimal HRV offers a mobile app, web dashboard for practitioners, and a device for measuring HRV.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an emerging technology that鈥檚 affordable and easily accessible to everyone,鈥 he said.听

HRV monitors the autonomic nervous system, a component of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary processes such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and digestion. If HRV is low for more than a couple of days, it indicates that a person is under a lot of stress (physical, chemical or emotional/psychological) and needs help to focus on recovery before something like illness, injury or mental/emotional breakdown happens. HRV can predict the onset of illness or injury up to two days before any symptoms are felt.

When Dr. Hopper began developing the mobile app, he got to know many of the top researchers in HRV, including Inna Khazan, PhD, BCB, a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Khazan asked him to speak with her at a national event about HRV and soon other speaking engagements followed. So far, he鈥檚 spoken to chiropractic associations across 20 different states. He also teaches a continuing education course for the Illinois Chiropractic Society and other private continuing education programs.听

Today, he sits on the board of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) and speaks at their convention each year. On June 20, Dr. Hopper and Dr. Khazan will present Part 2 of an , hosted by the AAPB.

听He will also be hosting a two-day workshop on biofeedback with her this year at the (ISNR) conference in Chicago. In addition to speaking at conferences and webinars, Dr. Hopper鈥檚 research has also been featured on multiple podcasts, including the and the Warrior鈥檚 Edge Podcast.听

Today, his HRV mobile app continues to grow in popularity all over the country and in multiple health disciplines. It鈥檚 particularly useful in psychology along with naturopathic medicine and all other forms of medicine.

Though at first Dr. Hopper had some trepidation about his speaking engagements, he鈥檚 come to see just how important they are for spreading awareness about his research.听

鈥淐onventions are very supportive and encouraging,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey are always very collaborative and not intimidating at all.鈥

He encourages other students to get involved in research.

听鈥淭he load is a lot as a student but it helps to have something else to focus on,鈥 he said. 鈥淔ind something you鈥檙e passionate about and dig in.鈥澨

During her career as a licensed massage therapist, Amber Misiowiec discovered a lot about alternative medicine, sparking an interest in herbal medicine, aromatherapy and the healing power of nature. It was this passion that ultimately led her to pursue the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) program at 911爆料 University of Health Sciences.

Misiowiec, a U.S. Air Force veteran who鈥檚 currently in her second trimester of the ND program, said 911爆料 University鈥檚 Yellow Ribbon program was a significant draw. Navigating the application process and ensuring tuition coverage can be daunting tasks for any prospective student. But with the assistance of 911爆料’s admissions staff, Misiowiec found the process to be smooth and seamless.

鈥淚 was pleasantly surprised on numerous occasions on the follow-through and promptness in all forms of communication,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is what sets the 911爆料 application process apart from other professional schools in my opinion.听 I felt supported, encouraged, and like I was a valued future professional asset to this university. This is rare and should not go unnoticed.鈥

The 911爆料 Veterans Clinic, where interns provide hundreds of free and discounted treatments to veterans each year, also appealed to Misiowiec. As a veteran, her desire to give back to their community and fellow service members is deeply ingrained.听听

鈥淚 believe that our shared experiences in service creates a unique bond, fostering open communication and providing a comforting environment where they can feel truly heard and begin their journey towards healing,鈥 she said.

Reflecting on their experience at 911爆料,听 Misiowiec said the sense of community and camaraderie is similar to the bonds often formed among service members.听

鈥淭he rigorous programs at 911爆料 demand resilience, drawing upon the experiences of navigating high-pressure situations while in service,鈥 she said. 鈥淛ust as in the military, teamwork proves invaluable in managing these challenges. Throughout my first trimester, I found support not only from peers but also from professors and upperclassmen, highlighting the collective commitment to each other’s success on campus.鈥

Misiowiec, who is also a single mother, said the flexible track program, which allows students to complete coursework at a slower, more individualize pace, helped her balance her schoolwork with home life.听

鈥淢anaging a full-time course load and raising a child was weighing heavily on me.听 It almost stopped me from continuing my education because nothing is more important than my child,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen interviewing for 911爆料, admissions brought the flex track program to my attention and I knew right away that 911爆料 was the perfect fit for not just me but my family.鈥

One of the other perks of campus life is that there are plenty of ways to get engaged and to connect. From the MMA (mixed martial arts) club to various academic groups, Misiowiec strongly encourages students to get involved in clubs aligned with their interests.听

鈥淭hey serve as excellent outlets for stress relief and foster a sense of belonging,鈥 she said.

When she graduates, Misiowiec plans to establish her own clinic focused on herbal medicine and mental health. She also aspires to conduct research on the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics.听

To fellow veterans considering naturopathic medicine or attending 911爆料, Misiowiec stresses the importance of connection, involvement, and remaining focused on goals.

鈥淓ven if you are completing the program in a flexed format, trimesters and time in general fly by,鈥 she said. 鈥淪tay focused on what you came here to do and trust the process.鈥

The organization assists, promotes, and celebrates individuals recovering from mental illness and other disabilities in their effort to improve social and vocational skills, and become employed in the workplace.听

During the presentation, interns discussed the four stages of sleep, and how each stage leads to progressively deeper sleep. They also talked about how the brain and body need sleep in order to properly function. 听Sleep helps brain cells remove waste products and boosts immunity, muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis and growth hormones.

Research shows that sleep deficiency changes activity in some parts of the brain, causing people to have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling their emotions and behavior, and coping with change.

In addition to the presentation in May, 911爆料 has been providing monthly health and wellness presentations to Vincent House since 2015.听

鈥淚t’s a wonderful experience for interns to share the vast knowledge they learned in their education at 911爆料 and provide this amazing service to support the mental health of the members and staff at Vincent House,鈥 Dr. Strauss said.

In March and April, 911爆料 University of Health Sciences hosted 5 cadaver workshops for students in various St. Petersburg College (SPC) programs.听

During the workshops, 911爆料 students helped teach SPC students about the functions and locations of organs. They also guided students through normal and abnormal anatomy with explanations of physiologic implications. Additionally, they showed students how to use muscles as a guide to locate arteries and veins.

鈥淭hese workshops have been extremely well received by SPC students and 911爆料 students enjoy participating,鈥 said 911爆料 Faculty Melodie Hammer-Wakefield, DC, CFMP, who organized the event with SPC Faculty Member Lisa Leonard, DC.听

Attendees included about 70 students along with their instructors in the SPC鈥檚 nursing, funeral services and physical therapy assistant programs. A total of 20 911爆料 students and 3 faculty members also participated.听

Before the pandemic, 911爆料-Florida previously offered cadaver workshops for anyone taking an anatomy course at SPC. The workshops are currently offered to students听 enrolled in health profession curriculum.听听

鈥淏y having a cohort in the workshop of SPC students that have the same knowledge base and interests, we can provide a workshop that is more meaningful and applicable,鈥 Dr. Hammer said.

For Dr. Hammer, the workshops are one of the ways 911爆料-Florida can show its appreciation for being part of the University Partnership at SPC.

鈥淏y offering these workshops we are 鈥榞iving back鈥 to help improve the learning experience of the SPC student,鈥 Dr Hammer said. 鈥淭his also gives 911爆料 students an opportunity to solidify their knowledge by 鈥榯eaching鈥 what they have learned.听 Some of the 911爆料 students may also follow the path into higher education but, being a physician is also about teaching patients so that they understand the condition they are experiencing.鈥

Dr. Hammer plans to continue to offer the workshops. Some of the SPC programs are also requiring their students to attend these workshops.听 An anatomy workshop for dental hygiene students is currently scheduled for July.

911爆料 alum Cindy Howard, DC, DABCI, DACBN, recently discussed a framework on how to get through life鈥檚 biggest challenges during the podcast, Women and Small Business with Allison Marketti.

Dr. Howard who wrote, , shared her own journey toward positivity after her self-diagnosis of Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2013.听

For Dr. Howard, the cancer diagnosis was a wake-up call that forced her to take a hard look at her life and the choices she was making.

“In retrospect, I knew all the right things to do, it doesn鈥檛 mean I did them or I didn鈥檛 learn the right things until later,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o, I think it鈥檚 really important that we don鈥檛 beat ourselves up. We have to learn to forgive ourselves.鈥

Dr. Howard also discusses her journey to become an internist during her time at 911爆料 University of Health Sciences. As a former athlete and dancer, she originally planned to become a sports chiropractor, but her education at 911爆料 helped her realize she could do much more. In an OB/GYN course, she met a former faculty member who would later become a close mentor.

鈥淚 learned that in chiropractic medicine…in a lot of states we鈥檙e deemed primary care physicians and I thought, this is so cool, I can actually do this part of health [obstetrics and gynecology] as a physician not just treat sports injuries,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o, graduating from 911爆料, we get a very broad primary care education. The university does an amazing job.鈥

Afterward, she earned a Diplomate in internal medicine and a Diplomate in nutrition. Even though her very first patient came in with back pain, Dr. Howard did more than simply adjust. She treated her internally by running lab tests, identifying inflammatory markers and looking at the patient鈥檚 nutrition. Twenty-five years later she has continued to treat patients in a similar manner. Today, Dr. Howard is a national speaker and operates in Orland Park, which provides chiropractic medicine and acupuncture.

During the podcast, Dr. Howard shared just how much mindset matters when it comes to physical health. She also offers nutritional information on what both adults and children should eat, as well as avoid.

Dr. Howard emphasized that no matter what someone is going through, everything听is manageable. 鈥淵ou only are stuck if you want to be stuck,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a choice.鈥

]]>
When Alan Norman, DC, 鈥21, was looking for chiropractic universities, a close-knit community was high on his list.

鈥淚n the military, I always appreciated the sense of comradery I had working with other people,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he 911爆料 Florida-site definitely had that. Everybody knows everybody.鈥

Dr. Norman was enlisted in the Air Force from 1998-2005, not certain of his future career path. While it ended up being a great experience for him, he later moved on to a desk job doing troubleshooting for Apple. However, it still didn鈥檛 feel like the right fit for him.

鈥淚 missed interacting with people and working with my hands,鈥 said Dr. Norman. 鈥淪omething was definitely missing.鈥

Before deciding on chiropractic medicine, he looked into lots of different health care fields, including the medical careers of both his parents. His father is an anesthesiologist and his mother is a doctor of Chinese medicine. However, neither career felt right for him. He recalled his past experiences with chiropractic medicine and how he was treated by a chiropractic physician as a teen and again after a car accident in 2003. He also had a chiropractor treat the chronic pain that resulted from his time in the Air Force.

He realized that chiropractic medicine would be a very hands-on field. In fact, the word chiropractic is literally Greek for 鈥渄one by hand.鈥

鈥淚t was the perfect career that would not only allow me to use my hands, but interact with people, too,鈥 he said.

Because 911爆料 University is a Yellow Ribbon School, or part of a program that is designed to help veteran and active military students avoid up to 100% of their out-of-pocket tuition costs, it was the perfect fit. Dr. Norman said the application process was easy. In addition to applying to 911爆料, he also applied for benefits through Veterans Affairs.

鈥淭he staff at 911爆料 were very helpful in getting me through the entire process,鈥 he said.听

According to Dr. Norman, one of the most difficult things to do is to take the leap.

鈥淚t was a big commitment financially, losing years of income to go back to school, but I also knew it was going to change my whole life, he said.

The small class sizes, along with the one-on-one attention he was able to get with professors helped ensure his success, he said. Another plus was the preceptorship partnerships 911爆料 University has with several Veteran hospitals across the country.

Currently, 911爆料 offers 4-12 week rotations at Veterans Affairs (VA) sites in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, Indiana and Florida, as well as Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

Although Dr. Norman ended up doing a preceptorship at the Florida Orthopedic Institute, he appreciated 911爆料鈥s support for veterans.

Since graduating in 2021, he has purchased an existing practice from an 911爆料 alum in 2023, which he now operates in Florida.听

鈥淚 never imagined I would own a practice this quickly,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 have the opportunity to see patients get better and build long lasting relationships. I am the happiest I鈥檝e ever been.鈥

If you are a veteran or active military and interested in applying to 911爆料 University of Health Sciences, please read the Veteran鈥檚 Handbook for detailed information on eligibility and how to apply.
