The time has finally come to present Dr. Addison Ozakyol, DC, ATC!

After almost four years in the chiropractic program here at 911爆料-Florida, I will finally graduate with my degree on December 18, 2020. While I am enormously excited to be finished and am beyond ready to begin working in the field, I will always look back and reminisce about the times I had here at school. I greatly enjoyed my experience throughout the program here at 911爆料!

Addison Ozakyol

Through my time in the program, I have been so lucky to have many opportunities that I have been involved with, and many that I didn鈥檛 know I would become so passionate about. I tutored four classes and their associated labs, stepped up as president of two student clubs, became a certified acupuncture provider, won first prize in the 2018 ACASC Tom Hyde student research competition, served as the first ever Senior Ambassador to NCMIC for the 911爆料-Florida campus, Ambassador and Board member of the Pinellas County Chiropractic Society (PCCS), was appointed 2nd Vice President of the Student ACASC, and finally, recognized with the 2020 Ed Feindberg ACASC Student of the Year Award. All of these extra interests and groups made for a wonderfully fulfilling time in the program, and I am honored to be able to help represent 911爆料 over the last three years.

Ultimately, while my journey may not have been one of a more the typical student in the DC program, the work and effort I put in both in and outside the classroom has really prepared me to feel comfortable, confident, knowledgeable, and ready (albeit a little nervous!) to be in practice. At this time, I do not know exactly what the plan is after graduation and have not finalized options, but I can say that it’s looking good that I will be an associate here in Pinellas County come early 2021!

Seeing as this is my final blog for the university, I wanted to take a quick moment to thank all the readers out there! Whether you have subscribed to the blog to follow the journey (shoutout home team!) or have stumbled across my posts while deciding on your future, I hope you enjoyed or found value in my content! I will certainly miss writing the blog for you and wish you all the best!

Whirlwind was the only word I could think of to describe the last two weeks. With it currently being Week 12 (out of 15) of my 10th and final trimester of the DC program, preparations for the real world are becoming all the more important.

To start things off, I am pleased to announce that I did pass my Part 3 and PT board exams from October, and officially have cleared one more hurdle to licensure post-graduation. Also, I successfully traveled to Port Orange, Florida to take Part 4, the final/practical standardized board exam, which featured one day of radiology examinations, followed by another day of physical exam and chiropractic procedures. I will not find out my score until after Christmas, but I feel that the DC program here at 911爆料-Florida prepared me very well for the test, and I felt fairly confident throughout the exam.

Addison 1-1

To top off the stress of road tripping to the most intense exam of our chiropractic experience, the day before we were set to drive across the state, Hurricane Eta (aka the literal whirlwind of my story) made landfall just off the coast from us. Thankfully, we only experienced one night of heavy wind and rain and by the next morning, Eta had already sped up and swerved north, veering away from the original path (our exact driving route across Florida), ensuring a safe trip for my classmates and myself.

Addison 2-1

As we move into the final weeks of my last trimester, I am both excited and a little sad to conclude my clinical rotation. I have learned so much by working here at the Pinellas Park Clinic, and really developed a rapport with my patients. I will be sad to leave the clinic, but I am very excited for the next step! I have an opportunity to shadow a chiropractic office within the community, which counts as the last 10 days of my clinical experience. I am excited to preview (not finalized yet) that I will be shadowing with a professor at a local sports chiropractic office. This place has a lot of the tools and uses many of the techniques and services I plan to work with in my own practice one day and I could not be more excited to spend an extended time with them. Hopefully, my next blog will have some exciting developments and news regarding that clinical rotation.

Finally, following the hurricane, board exams, and end of clinic, my schedule has opened up, stress has gone down, and I will be able to enjoy the remaining weeks of this year and the upcoming holiday season. I have been able to go on more walks through the nature reserves (see obligatory alligator picture!), prepare a few fun meals with my girlfriend, and most importantly: finally relax a bit! I am very excited to see what the next month has to bring before graduation and look forward to sharing it with all of you readers here in a few weeks.

As the clock slowly winds down to my graduation from the DC program here at 911爆料-Florida, I now find myself staring face-to-face with the last, longest, and possibly the toughest (and most expensive) board exam yet 鈥 Part 4.

Addison 1

This coming weekend, a couple of classmates and I will be driving out to Port Orange, Florida to Palmer鈥檚 Florida campus to take our 2-day board exam. While the rest of our exams have been moved to an online format and can be taken at testing sites around Tampa Bay, Part 4 is unique in that it is a practical based test and will feature mock patients, case evaluation, adjusting set ups, and radiology. I have been studying very diligently since taking Part 3 and PT about a month ago and am very eager to be through this one last chiropractic exam.

As you may have guessed, with my boards on the imminent horizon, I have not done much of anything outside of clinic. However, I have been lucky enough to shadow a few local chiropractors in the area and even a few of my professors in their private practices over previous weeks. I have really enjoyed observing so many different chiropractors, and while many come from different backgrounds and employ different techniques and therapies, they all had amazing rapport with patients and nearly every single patient interaction I have observed over the previous weeks ended with patients feeling much better than they arrived, regardless of what technique was performed.

While I may not choose to practice like some of my observed docs, I found incredible value in being able to see what I like or don鈥檛 like in an office and use it to guide my current job search and of course to keep things in mind for when I eventually have my own practice.

The last two weeks have been pretty uneventful over here in Florida! I have been very busy at the clinic and have been seeing anywhere from four to eight patients a day, depending on what sort of treatments I am performing each day. Being one of the few acupuncture trained interns at our clinic, I find myself helping out with a lot of patients by co-managing with acupuncture therapies while they receive chiropractic care from another intern. This makes for very fun and dynamic treatment sessions as there are a lot of moving parts to a treatment plan. It is a super satisfying feeling working together with another intern and seeing results with our shared patient! I am really enjoying working in the clinic and training the Trimester 8 students, but I am very excited to graduate and go out to practice in the real world.

Outside of clinic, I have been diligently studying for the Part IV board exam. This exam will be a practical exam and the last of my chiropractic boards. I take it in just about three weeks and at this point I鈥檓 just ready to get it over with–I am definitely feeling ready to be done with studying for a little while!

Addison 2B

As for the rest of my time, things have been pretty slow. I spend most of my free time either studying or working on things around the apartment but have enjoyed the few study breaks out of the house. Most recently, my girlfriend and I met up with some friends at a fun watch party put on by the St. Pete Pier for the world series. It was game three, which the Rays ended up losing, but it was still a lot of fun to be outside and enjoying the game with others.

The next day, a company finally came to remove our resident beehive located right across the hall from my front door. Here鈥檚 hoping the sixth time is the charm and the bees are safely relocated to a new location (and actually stay this time!).

The last two weeks have been relatively tame from a school and extracurricular standpoint. Last weekend, the Pinellas County Chiropractic Society Board had its annual board meeting/retreat. I was included this year as I am currently the Tri 10 Student Ambassador between 911爆料 and the PCCS 鈥 an official board position which is pretty cool. We spent the majority of a day discussing budget, fundraising options, and a series of events we hope to hold over the next year if COVID will allow. This was a great opportunity to meet some of the leaders of the field here in our community and see how organizations like this run behind the scenes. This experience on the board and seeing how all the docs work together to benefit chiropractic in Pinellas County, has reaffirmed my thoughts on continuing my involvement with local boards and the community as a graduated Doctor of Chiropractic.

Photo 4

Outside of the PCCS meeting, I have not been up to much over the last two weeks. I have Part 3 and PT board exams coming up this coming weekend, so I have been studying as much as possible. We held another beach cleanup to benefit the Gulfport Neighborhood Association, and we always have a great showing to this event.

Photo 1-4

Something that has been usual over the last couple weeks has been all of my animal experiences lately. Last week, a company was hired to move my resident beehive that was in the wall directly across from my apartment stairs (haven鈥檛 used these stairs in MONTHS). It was interesting to see the bees respond to the guys in their bee suits and to watch the stragglers come back to the moved hive afterword.

Collage-1

During the beach cleanup we found not just one, but 6-8 horseshoe crabs that had buried themselves up on the beach. These are incredibly cool creatures that I haven鈥檛 seen very often so it was a nice treat. Also, at the beach, at my weekly run we were able to enjoy a spectacular sunset all while dodging giant jellyfish that had washed up on the beach (not the best night to run barefoot on my part).

And finally, just yesterday I went to our apartment grill to cook and found a young opossum trapped in the trashcan at my apartment. I took the little guy to the edge of the property and placed the can on its side. After a few minutes the little possum ran off into the woods which was a very satisfying feeling considering I had NO idea how to handle the entire situation. The Florida wildlife never ceases to amaze me.

Over the past year I have been very involved with the ACA Sports Council (ACASC) as a member of the student executive committee, serving as the 2nd Vice President of the organization. We were super excited to host this event in Long Beach this year, but alas, COVID got in the way and forced us to transition to a virtual event. While we were all pretty disappointed, we made the best with what we could and tried our hardest to make the experience valuable for all of our student members.

At laptop 2

As 2nd Vice President, my job title was pretty much planning student events and symposium activities, a task that felt very obsolete when we found out we were switching to virtual. I took it as an opportunity to get creative and produced some fun content for our group including zoom calls on research posters, video interviews with ACASC Hall of Fame members, and other video or social media-based items. While it was a lot of extra work outside of school and clinic, I really enjoyed the opportunities that I had, the connections I made, and my overall experience. This weekend, it finally came to fruition, and the symposium went off without a hitch! I learned a lot from the speakers and am excited to apply my knowledge to my patients in the clinical setting.

Tavia 2

To top off a great symposium weekend, it was a HUGE weekend for representation of 911爆料. For the third year in a row, we had a student presenter in the annual Tom Hyde Student Research Poster Competition. This year, one of our Tri 9 interns, Tavia, presented her research on 鈥淓xploring the Relationship Between Respiratory Muscle Training and Exercise Performance鈥 and placed 3rd overall! Not only was this the third year we had a student presenter, it was the third year our student made the podium! I was extremely impressed with her presentation, which was recorded in advance and played for all the sports chiropractors in attendance, but I was blown away by her ability to answer every question thrown at her during the live, Zoom-based, Q&A session. A very well-deserved award, so huge congratulations to her!

Student of the Year 2

Finally, I am very pleased to announce that I was recognized as the ACASC Student of the Year! This award is given to one student who has shown promise, grit, and effort in the field of sports chiropractic and significant involvement with the ACASC. There were many students that stepped up to the plate this year and helped to make the symposium, and the year as a whole, a success, despite setbacks from virtual learning and COVID. To be chosen as Student of the Year means so much to me and I couldn鈥檛 be more grateful for the opportunity to represent 911爆料 and students interested in sports chiropractic across the country. I really look forward to continuing my work with ACASC as a new doctor of chiropractic in the upcoming years!

As always, if you have any questions, please email me at addisonozakyol@student.nuhs.edu.

I鈥檓 not sure if all you readers feel the same, but with COVID, schedule changes, and the business of clinic life, time has certainly flown by during this summer trimester. I cannot believe that it is already week 14 of my 9th trimester. With only one more trimester to go, I can safely say I am very excited to graduate and move on to the next steps, but it will be bittersweet transitioning my patients to the next group of interns.

Clinic life is simply too much fun. I absolutely LOVE coming to clinic every single day and figuring out the puzzle pieces of treatment that make the difference in my patient鈥檚 presentation and care. The feeling of having a patient show immense improvement from the care you provide is an incredible feeling and I look forward to it every day.

Clinic Crew_2

Over the last month I have been lucky enough to be a part of the 911爆料 Veteran鈥檚 Clinic 鈥 a free acupuncture clinic that we provide to veterans within the community on Fridays. Through this opportunity I have learned tongue and pulse diagnosis (a means of using the feel of a pulse and the appearance of the tongue to diagnose the patient with a traditional Chinese medicine complaint) and been able to integrate it into my acupuncture care. I have very much enjoyed working with our acupuncture professor and my fellow intern to reinvigorate this clinic now that we have returned after closing down for COVID-19.

Beach Crew

Outside of clinic, things have been pretty busy. I helped to coordinate a beach cleanup in partnership with the Gulfport Neighborhood Association in order to give our students a safe and socially distant community service opportunity. I was pleased to have a good turnout, and we were able to clean up a large area around the Gulfport Beach Complex and really help out their neighborhood association.

DINNER_2

In addition, I have been studying for extra board exams, working extensively with the ACA Sports Council, and trying to find time for myself. Thankfully, this weekend I was able to set aside an evening and prepare a delicious seafood meal for my girlfriend and me. It was a much-needed break from reality, and we both thoroughly enjoyed the feast we cooked up.

Well, with it being the end of the trimester you readers will not hear from me for a couple of weeks. Keep an eye out for the next post soon after Labor Day. And as always, if you have any questions, please email me at addisonozakyol@student.nuhs.edu.

Our first two weeks back to in-person clinic were hectic to say the least. Integrating all the interns from both clinics and our lab classes into one building while socially distancing was a challenge, but we made it work. We rotated on and off of early mornings and late evenings to make sure all of our patients had the ability to be seen with the fewest number of people in the clinic at a time. We were given specific areas where we were able to spend our time between patient visits and I was lucky enough to secure a spot in one of our acupuncture rooms and got to enjoy a little sunlight or storm watching between appointments.

A-Jul 27

Our schedule has been busy and we have had a lot of patients returning for care, and even some new patients sprinkled in throughout. Thankfully, the SPC campuses have begun to open up and our clinic schedule is returning to normal this week. I look forward to getting back into our normal routine and finally getting set on a long-term schedule.

B - Jul 27

I also started this week with the 911爆料 Veteran鈥檚 Clinic. Every Friday, until the end of August, I will be providing complementary acupuncture care to veterans out of our clinic. This program is such an incredible service to our community, and I am very happy to be involved with it.

As interns, we get added practice with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as learn some new techniques. Most recently we have been learning tongue and pulse diagnosis as a way to evaluate our patients. Every patient who comes in has his or her pulse taken on both arms, and we look at the tongue before we render a diagnosis. Depending on how the pulse feels or the tongue looks, we can determine which acupuncture channels may be affected and which points we need to needle in order to encourage Qi, or blood flow and healing for our patients. It is a very delicate form of evaluation, and I will certainly need a lot of practice in the future to make it a suitable addition into my personal practice in the future.

Finally, its officially the rainy season here in Florida. We have had many powerful storms over the previous weeks. I have found it increasingly important to get out and enjoy the good weather when I can, and it appears many of the Florida critters feel the same.

C - Jul 27

Just the other day, this snapping turtle was hanging out right behind my car before I had to hurry to clinic for the day. After a little encouragement and several minutes, it finally lumbered away to a less busy resting spot.

As always, if you have any questions, please email me at addisonozakyol@student.nuhs.edu.

The day has finally come, we are opening our clinic back up! The last two weeks have been fairly busy wrapping up some of the preparations for returning to in-person clinic, but we made it. For right now, all first patient encounters 鈥 they be new patients or returning patients for their re-evaluation visits鈥揾ave been taking place via telehealth, so that we can limit the amount of time needed to re-establish our patients as well as reduce the number of people coming in and out of clinic.

Photo 1-3

Thus far, the system has worked pretty well! We still have a reduced patient load and are actively working to bring our patients back into the office, but it simply feels good to be seeing patients in person again! I am very excited for the remaining weeks of this trimester to be able to hone my skills and help my patients get better. I am also looking forward to giving you all some updates as we iron out our routines and the changes that have been made as a result of this pandemic.

Photo D

This last weekend was a very nice one as I was lucky to have one of my best friends visit for a quick trip before clinic started back up. Having not seen each other in almost five years, we were long overdue for a reunion! It was certainly too quick of a visit and I hope to see her again soon.

Double Pix

Because of COVID-19 related restrictions, we limited ourselves to outdoor activities and exploring with our masks on. In doing so we actually discovered that the new St. Pete Pier is finally open (it鈥檚 been under construction the whole time I鈥檝e lived here ~ 3 years). The following day we enjoyed Indian Rocks Beach and took a quick trip to walk around Tarpon Springs for a little while.

Now that you readers have made it to the end of my post, you are probably wondering what the surprise is that I mentioned in the title. Well, Part 2 Board results came in a day early and I passed! I was very pleased to see that I did better than I expected and am super relieved that it is done. As a reward I will enjoy relaxing in my free time over the next couple of days, but it is already time to start studying for the next big exam. The grind never stops!

After taking my Part 2 chiropractic board exam two weeks ago, I was able to score a flight home for a nice visit with the family. Since COVID-19 hit during the end of my last trimester, I was unable to go home for break as I had wanted and was due for a visit home. With regulations lifting slightly, and enough time upon my return to self-quarantine before seeing patients, I didn鈥檛 hesitate to hurry home!

Family

I spent several days at home with my family, enjoying take out from my favorite New Mexican restaurants and quality time at home. I got a chance to go on a hike, play video games with my brother, and even mow the lawn (something I have actually missed since living in an apartment). After a few days at home, my brother and I took a sibling road trip up to Kemmerer, Wyoming 鈥 a small town in the southwest corner of the state. If you google 鈥渢hings to do in Kemmerer鈥 only two things come up: the original J.C. Penny store founded in 1902 and fish fossil digging.

Buildings

My brother has always been interested in fossils, so we made the trip up to find some of our own. I will be honest, sitting in the rocks in the middle of nowhere digging up fossils for eight hours (yes, EIGHT HOURS) without shade did not sound all that appealing to me, but it ended up being a blast! After an hour or two of figuring out how to hammer and chisel at the rocks in the best way to reveal the fossils, and channeling a little luck, I finally fell into the groove of things and began to discover some good fossil finds. The day was very long and exhausting but being able to take home fossils we had dug up ourselves was a very cool experience and I will always treasure having these little fish up on my shelves.

Addison 1

The very next day we made the drive back to Albuquerque stopping at a few fun towns along the way. We took Stegosaurus Freeway through Dinosaur, Colorado and continued on to the tiny mountain town of Ouray where we stopped for a short break. This was truly a beautiful place nestled in between the mountains and I really hope to go back and spend some time there one day. Upon arriving back home it was time to pack up my fossils and rest up as much as possible before flying back to Florida within the next two days. I am so glad I took the opportunity to see my family before we return to in person clinic in the coming weeks. Being away from my family during the pandemic was challenging, as I鈥檓 sure many of you readers have experienced in the past months. Seeing them helped me regain a bit of sanity and gave me a boost that鈥檒l carry me through the end of this trimester and the upcoming board exams!
